Discover Guadarrama
Accommodation in Guadarrama
Cultural history, historic routes and nature offer different ways to explore Guadarrama. At the Centro Cultural La Torre, you can see a medieval Mudéjar apse, a wall and a tower. Hiking trails have their own focus: one route highlights former occupations connected with wood, while others explore historic sites. The Mercado Medieval and the municipality’s landscape also contribute to the character of the town.
Cultural history at the Centro Cultural La Torre
Until the end of the 19th century, the Centro Cultural La Torre was the church of San Miguel Arcángel and has Romanesque origins. Its surviving architectural features include a medieval Mudéjar apse, a wall and a tower. Its former function as a church and its cultural role today make it a point of interest for anyone interested in Guadarrama’s architectural history.
Visits can be arranged in advance with the Guadarrama municipal tourism services. Information panels outlining key historical milestones in the municipality complement a guided tour. If you would like to plan a visit, arrange a time with the tourism services beforehand.
Hiking trails and historic sites
El bosque plateado is a 10.3-kilometre route of moderate difficulty that starts at Parking Cordobés. Along the way, interpretive information covers former occupations associated with wood. The route therefore combines a specific distance with an insight into the region’s working history.
The Ruta de los Pinares de Guadarrama is a 14.2-kilometre circular hike. Their different details help distinguish the two trails: El bosque plateado has a stated difficulty level and a named starting point, while the Ruta de los Pinares is described as a circular route and is longer. Conditions on individual trails may change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out.
“Guadarrama: In the Footsteps of the War” maps and explains more than 500 sites across 21 positions in 15 interpretive sketches. The offering includes ten routes graded by difficulty. Downloadable information about points of interest supports independent exploration. So, alongside a hike through the pine forest, visitors can also choose routes focused on putting historic sites into context.
The Mercado Medieval in August
The Mercado Medieval has been held on the first weekend of August for many years. Stalls offer handicrafts, food and other products. Traders, craftspeople and artists in historical clothing also help shape the market. Its recurring date offers an opportunity to plan a stay around the market; if you are planning to attend, check the specific event dates.
Landscape and literary history
Near Puerto de León, a protected landscape area encompasses the rock formation between Collado de la Sevillana and Peña del Cuervo. The area also includes the pine trees growing there, the rest of the natural vegetation and a spring at the foot of the rock. Guadarrama’s natural landscape is home not only to pine trees, but also to lush ferns and bearberry; deer, badgers and foxes hide among this vegetation.
A landscape area within the municipality was protected in 1930 to mark six centuries of the “Libro del Buen Amor.” Literary history is therefore another point of reference in Guadarrama’s landscape, alongside its natural features and the routes that open the area up to people with different interests.
