Valdemorillo: Architecture, Traditions and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Valdemorillo
Valdemorillo offers a range of options for planning your trip: late Gothic architecture, technical collections, local traditions and several routes with specified lengths and characteristics. You can tailor your time to local history, events or trails through the countryside, for example.
Church Architecture and Local History
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and is considered an example of late Gothic Castilian architecture. It was built between the late 15th century and the first third of the 16th century, and completed at the end of the 16th century. Its interior is entirely covered by ribbed vaults with a variety of star patterns. The ribs and arches rest on piers attached to the walls and articulated with mouldings. Its construction and history give the church a concrete role when exploring the town’s historical heritage.
The former ceramic industry heritage is also part of the town’s history. The surviving parts of the former Valdemorillo factory complex are specially protected as a significant example of the region’s historical ceramic industry heritage. The protection decision is dated 31 March 2026.
Museum, Heritage Route and Traditions
The Museo Eduardo Barreiros has 800 square metres of exhibition space, a permanent collection and an extensive documentary archive. Its interactive displays include cars, lorries and tractors, as well as an EB6 diesel engine cut open for demonstration purposes. This brings complete vehicles together with a view inside an engine. The Ruta de la Piedra has a different focus: its multimedia tour of local heritage includes 24 selected points of interest. Plaques mark the stops, and QR codes link to video guides.
During the Romería de la Virgen de la Esperanza, the image of the Virgin is carried from the parish church to the Ermita de Valmayor. The festival includes a picnic and the El Rondón dance. The romería is a recurring June tradition, though the exact date varies. El Rondón is also revived each year through competitions during the patron saint celebrations. These festivities last a week and include, among other events, a bullfighting event and bull runs; dates and programmes vary.
For visits to CUMVAL, a municipal notice dated 26 February 2024 states that an appointment must be made in advance. Before visiting, check how the procedure is currently handled.
Hiking Routes and Landscape
The linear Senda de Colmenarejo a Valdemorillo (R14) runs from Colmenarejo to Valdemorillo and is 16.2 kilometres long. It is classified as a low-difficulty hiking route. Along the way, it crosses the River Aulencia beside the ruins of a grain mill. Also linear, the 9.7-kilometre Senda de Valdemorillo a Villanueva de la Cañada (R19) starts in Valdemorillo, is rated as low difficulty and passes the Fortín de la Guerra Civil as a point of interest. For both routes, it is advisable to check current trail conditions before setting out.
The six-kilometre Senda de las Ánimas is circular, classified as a low-difficulty route and runs entirely within Valdemorillo. It passes through pine forests, holm oak groves and riverside woodland within the ZEPA 56 special protection area for birds. The three routes can be distinguished by their stated lengths and formats: R14 and R19 are linear trails, while the shorter Senda de las Ánimas forms a loop.
Valdemorillo is one of the 19 municipalities in the protected Parque Regional del Curso Medio del río Guadarrama y su entorno. The Embalse de Valmayor reservoir is also nearby. Water sports such as sailing and fishing are practised there; the area also includes riverside ecosystems, holm oak groves and flooded areas.
