Visitors choosing Daganzo De Arriba as a destination can explore local history, recurring festivals and landscapes. Historical traces range from a former forge to a church with a possibly medieval bell tower. The trails described here take in riverside vegetation, various habitats and places connected with the town’s history.

Landscapes and Birdwatching

The entire municipality is part of the ZEPA Estepas Cerealistas de los Ríos Jarama y Henares (Jarama and Henares River Cereal Steppes Special Protection Area). The area is home to significant populations of steppe birds, including Montagu’s harriers, great bustards, European rollers, lesser kestrels, sandgrouse and little bustards. Along the stretch of the Río Torote, visitors can watch birds among large poplars, aspens and willows; this does not guarantee sightings of any particular species.

The route descriptions highlight different aspects of the landscape. One route reaches a point on Cerro del Moro where various habitats meet. A route in the northern part of the municipality follows the Colada del Monte, which runs parallel to the Arroyo del Monte. Another route leads to Cuesta de AntolĂn. Along it, visitors can see the riverside vegetation associated with the Arroyo, and the route also passes Parque Forestal MarĂa Marzol. These details can help you choose a route based on its landscape and the places mentioned, without assuming a particular walking time or difficulty level.

Local History and Historical Traces

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Espino is in the El Almazanejo area, four kilometres from the town, and was once the church of a settlement. According to local tradition, the first settlement of Daganzo was on the banks of the Río Torote, at the site of the hermitage and beside the old Camino de Talamanca. El Almazanejo is also home to the remains of the former palace house of the Counts of Coruña, a building dating from the late 15th century. The town’s history is reflected both in traditional accounts of early settlements and in surviving structural remains.

A forge was established at the Antigua Fragua de Daganzo in 1890. Agricultural equipment and carts were repaired there, and it continued operating until the late 1970s. The Antigua Fragua also preserves the typical layout of a rural-urban dwelling found in Daganzo and the surrounding towns. Another archaeological trace is a necropolis dated to the 6th century. It was discovered by chance in 1929 on the way to Finca La Heredad.

The church also offers clues to different historical periods. Most of its bell tower belongs to the original Mudéjar structure, which may date from the 12th century. The church in Daganzo De Arriba also houses a large monstrance made entirely of silver. According to local tradition, it was in the church of Daganzo de Abajo in 1612 and was brought to the church in Daganzo De Arriba after that place disappeared.

Festivals and Planning Your Visit

The religious events of Semana Santa de Daganzo (Daganzo Holy Week) run from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. On Good Friday, the programme includes a procession of the Stations of the Cross through the town and the traditional performance of the Passion. La PasiĂłn de Daganzo is performed by local residents; the idea for it originated in 1986. All the scenes take place in the area around Plaza de la Villa. The audience stands in the middle and can follow the entire performance by turning through 360 degrees.

The Romería, or pilgrimage, to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Espino is another recurring annual tradition; its date varies. Every year on 1 May, young people erect a “Mayo” in Plaza de la Villa. If you want to combine your trip with one of these festivals, check the dates and programme for the relevant year before finalising your visit plans.

The Museo de Bomberos (Firefighters’ Museum) has collections of helmets, breathing apparatus, historic firefighting equipment and other objects. Visits are available by prior appointment only; the museum offers a guided tour lasting about an hour. Confirm your appointment in advance, as arrangements may change.
