Colmenar Viejo offers two clearly distinct focuses for a stay: cultural history and routes through the landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Colmenar Viejo, consider whether architectural and local history, or trails and views, should play a greater role in your travel plans. The following places show the different themes you can take into account.

Basilica, museum and archaeological history

The Basílica de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is a landmark of Colmenar Viejo’s architectural history. Construction began around 1480–1490 and was completed in the 1540s. By Decree 56/1997, the basilica was protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. If you are interested in religious architecture and protected cultural heritage, this is a specific historical highlight.

The Casa Museo de la Villa is housed in a 17th-century building. Its museum rooms include a wine press and a wine cellar; the collection covers the history of Colmenar Viejo, important economic sectors and traditional crafts. This brings together insights into the building and the town’s economic and craft history. A municipal post from September 2021 mentions free guided tours of the municipality’s tourist attractions and lists the Casa Museo itself and the basilica as destinations. If you plan to join such a tour, check the current dates and conditions in advance.

The archaeological sites also offer different points of interest. The Visigothic necropolis of Remedios was included in the Plan de Yacimientos Visitables in 2003. The Yacimiento de Navalvillar was characterized by a strong mining and metallurgical focus, based on extracting iron from magnetite. The unpaved route to the site branches off at kilometer 4 of the M-625, near the parking area for the Ermita de los Remedios. As local access conditions may change, check them before your visit.

The Museos Geológicos al Aire Libre display geological structures, rocks and fossils. A municipal description from October 2024 mentions a total of 191 items that visitors can view and study there. Geology is therefore another focus alongside architectural, craft and archaeological history.

Industrial history and landscape

Los Molinos y Batanes de El Grajal are located within the municipality of Colmenar Viejo, in the Parque Regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares and in an area designated as a Reserva Natural Integral. The hydraulic complex comprises a fulling mill, three mills and two industrial facilities; the latter were used as both mills and fulling mills. The complex was in operation by 1605 at the latest, while its earliest known mention dates to 1546. These details combine the complex’s built layout with a long history of use.

Routes, views and practical information

The 8Rutas network starts in the built-up area of Colmenar Viejo and offers more than 200 kilometers of walking and cycling routes. Dehesa de Navalvillar is a municipal estate of more than 1,000 hectares, where livestock farming is combined with leisure, sporting and educational activities. The route through the dehesa offers broad horizons and far-reaching views. Keep this in mind when planning: dogs are not allowed in the dehesa.

The Camino de Pedrezuela leads to Alto de la Camorcha, which offers a 360-degree panorama of Madrid. The Río Manzanares route follows the Manzanares River; its features include diverse flora and fauna, mills, remains of former mines, and a forest of holm oaks, oaks and ash trees in the Parque Regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares. The two descriptions emphasize different aspects: the Camino de Pedrezuela focuses on the expansive views, while the Río Manzanares route combines riverside scenery, nature and traces of history.

When choosing, you can first consider whether you would rather focus your stay on cultural sites and collections or on the landscape and route themes described here. These different focuses provide practical guidance when looking for hotels in Colmenar Viejo, without assuming any particular accommodation or amenities.
