Ciempozuelos brings together protected wetlands and a long history of architecture and exhibitions. Its landscape ranges from seasonal lagoons to irrigated farmland and riverside woodlands; in the town, you will find churches and convents with varied architectural features. Its archaeological history is also on display, from Bronze Age finds to exhibitions about the Bell Beaker.

Nature and Landscape

The municipality of Ciempozuelos lies within the Parque Regional del Sureste and is part of the Red Natura 2000 network. The regional park’s protected wetlands include the Lagunas de Ciempozuelos. The area is a mix of seasonal lagoons, irrigated farmland and riverside woodlands, where more than 200 bird species have been observed. Both wetlands and agricultural land shape the landscape.

Several route descriptions focus on different things. One route runs from the town centre to the banks of the Jarama River. An easy circular route goes around hills and grain fields and passes some olive groves. Another appealing circular walk has very little elevation gain and takes in several interesting places in the municipality. When planning, you can therefore choose between a riverside destination, a loop through the agricultural landscape and a route with stops in Ciempozuelos, without treating these routes as interchangeable.

Routes and Getting There

Cyclists also have a specific route to follow: CiclaMadrid Stage 17, “Parque del Sureste y Paisaje Cultural de Aranjuez,” passes through Ciempozuelos. The CiclaMadrid stage and the circular walks described above offer different ways to explore the landscape.

Ciempozuelos is accessible via Cercanías Line C3, intercity bus lines 410, 415, 416, 425 and 426, and the A4 motorway. Check train and bus timetables before setting off, as they may change.

Religious Buildings and History

Construction of the Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena began in the late 15th or early 16th century. It was extended in the 17th century with a Baroque brick apse. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo has a different character: its understated Baroque façade incorporates elements of classical architecture, while the dome above the altar is decorated with religious paintings dating from 1707.

The Convento de Santa Clara dates back to 1609 and is the oldest religious foundation in Ciempozuelos. The exterior of the Iglesia de Las Clarisas displays the understated Baroque style of the first half of the 17th century. Red brick contrasts with white stone around the portal surrounds and lintels. If you are interested in religious architecture, the buildings offer a range of details: the brick apse, the combination of brick and pale stone, and the paintings above the altar.

The Oblate Congregation Museum preserves the room of its founder, Antonia María de Oviedo Schöntal. The museum is located in the former convent. Another way to learn about local history and its notable figures is the “Tras las huellas de San Benito Menni” route, created by Fundación Hospitalarias. It invites you to explore places associated with San Benito Menni and the founders of the Hermanas Hospitalarias, María Josefa Recio and María Angustias Giménez. Guided tours are also available, introducing you to the municipality’s history, culture and emblematic places.

Archaeology and Exhibitions

The Ciempozuelos Bell Beaker belonged to a group of ceramics that also included a cooking pot and a bowl. The objects were discovered in 1894 and 1895 during construction of the road from Cuesta de la Reina to San Martín de la Vega, now the M-404. The Bell Beaker is currently on display at the Museo Arqueológico Nacional; check its current exhibition status before visiting.

The Casa de la Cultura houses a permanent exhibition about the Bronze Age and “El Vaso Campaniforme.” Another permanent exhibition about Las Salinas Espartinas can be visited at the Biblioteca Municipal Almudena Grandes, Calle Colegiata 3. Check its current availability before visiting. Together, the exhibitions offer insights into different archaeological topics in Ciempozuelos, while the Bell Beaker is also linked to a specific local find context.
