San Sebastián de los Reyes combines protected natural areas with historical and cultural attractions, as well as motorsport events. If you are looking for a hotel in the city, you can start planning your trip by deciding what interests you locally: walks and nature watching, architecture and history, or events. The following highlights show what the city has to offer.

Nature and signposted routes

The Dehesa Boyal is part of the Parque Regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares and the “Cuencas altas de los ríos Manzanares, Lozoya y Guadarrama” Biosphere Reserve. Its Mediterranean woodland offers space for walking, sports activities and nature watching. This makes the Dehesa Boyal a possible focus for travellers who want to include nature and exercise in their time here.

The Jarama runs for more than 11 km from north to south along much of the eastern municipal boundary. The river is home to diverse vegetation and a rich amphibian and bird fauna. The stretches of the Jarama and Guadalix rivers within the municipality are part of the “Cuenca de los ríos Jarama y Henares” Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and therefore of the Natura 2000 network. The city’s natural setting thus brings together river landscapes and designated protected areas.

The network includes three signposted nature routes for walking, cycling or horse riding. They connect municipal natural areas via paths and drovers’ roads. Route 2 passes through Parque de los Arroyos, the Dehesa Boyal and Tempranales. Route 3 follows the Colada del Camino de Barajas a Torrelaguna through residential areas. Signage and access conditions may change, so check them when planning a specific route.

Historic buildings and culture

El Caserón, a large 17th-century agricultural residence and farm building, stands on Plaza de la Constitución. It was renovated and extended, while retaining significant architectural features. The building houses a museum of art and popular traditions. It conveys the town’s former agricultural and livestock-raising past, as well as its economic and social development over the centuries. If a museum visit is important to your plans, check in advance what visiting options are available, as access arrangements may change.

The architecture in the historic centre also offers a glimpse of different eras. A church there dates from the 15th and early 16th centuries. Its origins are Mudéjar; following later renovations, the interior is predominantly Baroque. On Plaza de Andrés Caballero stands a bronze monument featuring three life-size bulls and three life-size runners. A theatre in the city is designed with inspiration from the Spanish corral de comedias, combining this model with modern architecture for the performing arts. These places offer different points of interest if you are interested in architectural history, public art or theatre.

Motorsport and the events calendar

The Circuito del Jarama hosts national championship races and its own RACE competitions, including the Trofeo Race de Turismos and the Trofeo Race de Motociclismo. The events programme also includes driving courses, dynamic vehicle tests, promotional shoots and other events for motorsport enthusiasts. Dates may change; if a particular event is key to your trip, check the programme for your travel dates.

The Fiestas in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de los Remedios are scheduled for 24 August to 1 September and are designated a Fiesta de Interés Turístico. More than 230 activities include religious events, traditional bull runs, gastronomy, family entertainment and music. Dates and individual programme items change each year. The municipality also holds a festive gastronomic event dedicated to Calderetas de carne de toro; the venue and programme may change.

Plan your journey and tailor your stay

A Cercanías commuter rail line connects San Sebastián de los Reyes with Madrid and the rest of the Comunidad de Madrid. As timetables may change, it is worth checking the service for your chosen travel date before setting off. Along with the range of nature, culture and events on offer, this rail connection can be a practical consideration when planning your stay.
