Los Santos De La Humosa: Churches, Hermitages and Landscape
Accommodation in Los Santos De La Humosa
Los Santos De La Humosa offers several clearly defined themes for a stay: the architectural history of the parish church of San Pedro ApĂłstol, two hermitages, a pilgrimage tradition, and a landscape of river meadows, countryside and plateau. If you are planning a trip around your cultural interests, you can explore sacred architecture, religious images and connections to the landscape. The area also has the history of a river crossing and work carried out on named routes.
Churches and Hermitages
Construction of the parish church of San Pedro ApĂłstol began in 1562 and was completed in 1677. It is an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) and has full protection under a resolution dated April 22, 1983. Beneath the tower is a baptistery with a flattened vault and a stone baptismal font.
The Ermita de la Virgen de la Soledad has its own religious history: the Cabildo de Nuestra Señora del Rosario built it in 1576 to house the image of the Quinta Angustia. Today it houses the image of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. Sidewalks along the road connect the hermitage to the town center, and the area in front of it has also been landscaped.
The Ermita de la Virgen de la Humosa was built in 1677 on the site of an earlier chapel, which had existed since 1384. It is a Baroque building with brick walls and masonry. Its single-nave layout has a barrel vault and a raised choir at the far end. The square main chapel has a dome resting on pendentives, with a lantern. Pendentives bridge the transition from the square plan to the dome; the barrel vault runs lengthwise over the nave.
Pilgrimage, Landscape and Routes
The Ermita de la Virgen de la Humosa is associated with a deeply rooted pilgrimage tradition. The dates given are the Sunday after the feast of Saint Isidore, popularly known as San Isidrillo, and the last Sunday in August. The first date is tied to the feast day, while the second falls on a Sunday in August. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, these are two different reference points for scheduling.
The landscape of Los Santos De La Humosa is a mosaic of river meadows, countryside and plateau. It also offers impressive views of the Henares Valley and the Sierra de Guadarrama. The bridge over the RĂo Henares was inaugurated on April 22, 1888; before that, the river was crossed by boat.
A municipal notice dated October 29, 2025, reports work on the Camino del Monedero and Cerro de las Monjas: the surface was consolidated and repaired to ensure pedestrian safety. For Cerro de las Monjas, the notice also reports improved informational signage and features for resting and taking in the views.
Another Activity
Another travel theme is the children’s track at Karting Club Los Santos. It is suitable for beginners and for improving driving skills. Karts can be rented, and driving skills can be further developed with support from the racing school. Alongside church architecture, pilgrimage traditions and landscapes, this gives you a specific driving activity to make a focus of your trip.
