Aldea Del Fresno: River Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Aldea Del Fresno
Aldea Del Fresno combines historic buildings with a landscape shaped by rivers and holm oaks. The circular routes offer different points of reference for planning your trip: they range from 18 to 39 kilometers in length, and one route is listed as easy. Other highlights include the seasonal swimming opportunity at Playa del Alberche and several protected historic sites.
Historic Buildings and Their History
The remains of Puente de La Pedrera date from the 18th century. The bridge is classified as a Bien de Interés Patrimonial and has been consolidated and converted into a museum site. At Iglesia San Pedro Apóstol, you’ll find another notable historic landmark: the church was built in 1752. Its tower is listed with protection level 2 in Aldea Del Fresno’s 1986 building protection catalog.
The ruins of Noria Árabe lie on the banks of the Río Perales and are also listed with protection level 2. Some authors date the structure to a period before the 12th century. This early dating is therefore an attributed assessment. Together with the bridge and the church, it offers a glimpse into different periods and forms of local cultural heritage.
Granja El Santo is a building complex of provincial interest. Its oldest element is Ermita de San Saturio, also known as San Saturnín: it dates from the 14th century and is considered a building of regional historical and artistic interest. The site is about 2.5 kilometers from Aldea Del Fresno, in the direction of Chapinería. Access is via a private road; confirm access arrangements before visiting. The patron saint festivities in honor of San Pedro Apóstol are also part of the local calendar. Exact program dates can vary from year to year.
River Landscape and Playa del Alberche
Playa del Alberche is a sandy beach at the confluence of the Alberche and Perales rivers and the Berciana stream, set within a wooded landscape. The Community of Madrid lists it in its 2026 seasonal guide as a natural bathing area suitable for swimming in summer. Swimming conditions can vary by season. The beach has accessible parking spaces, and the water is usually shallow there.
Nature conservation also shapes the surroundings: parts of the municipality lie within a Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves (ZEPA), a special protection area for birds. This designation highlights how the natural setting can play its own role in planning a trip, alongside the historic sights.
Circular Routes on Foot and by Bike
The Cordel de las Merinas circular route is 18 kilometers long, starts in the town center, and can be traveled on foot, on horseback, or by bicycle. It passes through Mediterranean holm oak woodland, which provides a habitat for woodland birds; signs of mammals can also be spotted. Along the way, the focus is not only on the distance covered, but also on the landscape and its wildlife.
The Cañada Segoviana - Playa del Alberche route is a 19-kilometer circular route rated easy, and it also starts in the town center. It leads to the banks of the Río Alberche and the Playa del Alberche recreation area. Along the way, it crosses a dehesa landscape characterized by holm oaks, where deer, wild boar, and other wild animals can be found. However, sightings are not guaranteed. Check current route conditions and access information before setting out.
For mountain bikers, the Ruta MTB por Aldea del Fresno y el Río Perales is a longer option: this circular route covers 39 kilometers, is rated moderate, and includes 556 meters of elevation gain. It starts at the municipal swimming pool via Paseo de la Estación and is not signposted. By comparison, the two walking and multi-use circular routes, at 18 and 19 kilometers, are similar in length; the MTB route covers a significantly longer distance.
