Villalbilla: Heritage and Nature
Accommodation in Villalbilla
Villalbilla offers several distinct attractions for a stay: the parish church Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora, the Primitiva Complutum archaeological site, local nature trails, the patron saint festival, and El Robledal Golf.
Culture and History
The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is a 16th-century parish church located on the slope of one of the hills surrounding Villalbilla. In 2011, it was recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the “Monument” category.
The Lavadero is a traditional 17th-century building. It once served as a spring, a watering place for livestock, and a public washhouse. Unlike the parish church, it reflects everyday uses from the past.
Primitiva Complutum is the archaeological site of the first Roman city. Around the 1st century BC, it stood on a hill overlooking the Henares Valley. An aerial-image interpretation suggests an urban layout of more than 30 hectares, with public buildings and the region’s only Roman theater. The archaeological site therefore takes visitors back to a much earlier period than the church and the Lavadero.
The Fiesta del Cristo de la Guía is Villalbilla’s patron saint festival and takes place around May 3. The Hermandad del Santísimo Cristo de la Guía organizes religious ceremonies such as a solemn mass, procession, offering, and triduum, as well as leisure activities including sports, music, dancing, children’s workshops, and fireworks. Dates and activities may vary from year to year; if you are traveling for the festival, check the event dates for that year.
Nature Trails and Leisure
The Villalbilla natural heritage project, published in 2020, comprises five videos about trails that cross the entire municipality. The videos invite visitors to respect and enjoy nature and take part in various leisure activities.
Ruta 2, “Los Hueros–Parque de Los Cerros,” is part of the five-part project on Villalbilla’s nature trails. It is recommended for walkers and cyclists; GPS tracks can be downloaded and followed using compatible route apps.
Ruta 1 is called “San Juan del Viso–Mirador del Salto del Cura” and is considered very easy and suitable for all ages and all seasons. Even so, in summer you should avoid the hottest times of day. The route information dates from 2020; check current trail conditions before setting out.
Golf in Villalbilla
El Robledal Golf is located in Villalbilla and opened in 1975. The course has 18 holes and a par of 72, and covers more than 65 hectares, including several facilities, lakes, and woods. Practice facilities include ten teeing areas, a putting green, and a practice bunker. El Robledal Golf offers individual and group lessons, as well as weekend courses for children. If lessons are important to your plans, confirm availability directly with the course.
