Several specific highlights make Cervera De Buitrago a rewarding place to stay: water sports on the Embalse de El Atazar, circular trails of varying lengths and the town’s architectural history. The following places and routes offer useful pointers for planning your time.

Water sports on the Embalse de El Atazar

The Área Náutica de Cervera De Buitrago is the only nautical area that provides access to the Embalse de El Atazar. Sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and stand-up paddleboarding are possible there year-round. The facility includes a boat ramp and jetties; there is also a rescue and navigation assistance service. The Área Náutica is therefore a specific point of reference for a stay that includes water sports.

Circular trails and routes of varying lengths

The Camino del Atazar is an easy, six-kilometre circular trail starting at Plaza de las Arcas, and is also suitable for bicycles. It follows a gravel path along the old road between Cervera De Buitrago and El Atazar. The Senda de los Prados begins on Calle de la Iglesia, is 2.3 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 84 metres. The trail crosses an old sediment-retention dam and then continues along the slope to the reservoir shore.

The Senda de los Prados passes through the Prados de Jimena to an inlet of the reservoir and runs alongside an old traditional beehive. Another option is La Dehesa del Soto, a 5.4-kilometre circular route starting in Cervera De Buitrago. For a much longer route, the Senda del Genaro, a circular trail of more than 70 kilometres, passes through Cervera and connects places around the Embalse de El Atazar. These details help you distinguish between short local trails and a large-scale circular route, without assuming walking times that have not been specified.

Landscape and views

The vegetation along La Dehesa del Soto changes with elevation: holm oaks and ash trees grow in the lower area, while higher up there are rockroses and rosemary. The dehesa is listed as a Monte de Utilidad Pública (Public Utility Woodland). The circular route thus combines a specific distance with a variety of landscape sections.

The Mirador de Cervera de Buitrago is located on the shore of the Embalse de El Atazar. From there, the view extends to the Sierra de la Cabrera, the Peña Negra massif and El Regajo. The viewpoint is part of the Camino del Molino and belongs to the Miradores network of the Mancomunidad del Embalse del Atazar; the viewpoints in this network have information boards. The Camino del Molino is an easy route that begins and ends in the town centre and leads to the site of an old mill, now beneath the reservoir’s waters.

Church and local traditions

The Church of Santa María de los Remedios is a Baroque church built in 1538 and retains its original apse. It is the only 16th-century building preserved in the town. Its features include a Moorish wooden coffered ceiling and a 19th-century bronze crucifix. The church offers a different focus from the trails and the Área Náutica: its architectural form and furnishings can be explored in a single historic building.

Local festival traditions also offer a glimpse into the town’s calendar. The main festival was traditionally celebrated on 18 and 19 December; today, it takes place on the weekend closest to those dates. A large chorizada is also held during the festivals and traditions. For the Luminaria, a bonfire is prepared behind the Albergue in the Las Eras area and lit at midnight.
