Discover Tielmes: Landscape, Heritage and Festivals
Accommodation in Tielmes
Tielmes lies in the Tajuña basin, a tributary of the Jarama. The Tajuña crosses the municipality from east to west. When choosing a destination, you can therefore focus on the river landscape, local cultural sites or traditional festivals. By car, you can reach Tielmes via the A-3 towards Valencia; at exit 41, the M-204 leads directly to the town. As road layouts may change, check your route before setting off.
River Landscape and Trails
The Ruta de las Fuentes y los Miradores links restored springs scattered throughout the municipality and passes through hillsides and plateaus. Both the springs and the changing terrain shape the route. It includes the Mirador del Valle and the Mirador de la Ermita. From there, you can enjoy views of the Vega and the Tajuña Valley. If you would like to take in both the landscape and the viewpoints, this trail brings them together in one place.
Cultural Sites in Tielmes
The parish church of Santos Niños Justo y Pastor is regarded as a clear example of a Baroque church in the Madrid region and as the municipality’s most important monument. Its dedication to the Santos Niños also connects the building with a tradition that has a distinct place in the local festival calendar.
The Museo Casa-Cueva consists of six rooms divided between a front and a rear section. The municipality restored the cave in 2006 because of its anthropological and historical value. The layout gives visitors a tangible sense of the space: rather than being one large open area, the museum is divided into two zones. Together, the parish church’s architectural character and this glimpse into a historic dwelling offer complementary perspectives.
Festivals and Regional Specialities
El Judas takes place on Easter Sunday and has been documented in Tielmes since the 17th century. The tradition also includes “correr el hornazo” after the festival: eating a typical regional cake made with flour, egg and sugar, decorated in the middle with one or more hard-boiled eggs. The cake is closely associated with this occasion and offers a distinctive culinary connection to the local celebration.
The San Isidro pilgrimage on 15 May leads from the parish church to the hermitage dedicated to the saint, at the foot of several hills. Participants are offered rosquillas and lemonade to sample; what is available may vary depending on the annual programme. The celebration in honour of the Santos Niños has been documented since at least 1616. On the main Sunday, a procession carrying images of the saints passes through the town. As the exact programme may vary from year to year, check the event details before travelling.
Bodegas Tagonius and the Wine Route
Bodegas Tagonius dates back to the mid-19th century. The winery is one of the points of interest on the “Enoturismo en Nuevo Baztán y Tielmes” wine route and is located at kilometre 4.4 on the road from Tielmes to Carabaña. If you plan to visit, check visiting arrangements in advance.
