Leganés: Culture, Sculpture and Green Spaces
Accommodation in Leganés
Leganés brings together historic architecture and sculpture with green spaces and leisure activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Leganés, you can choose the focus of your stay according to your interests: culture, nature or a scheduled event. The city offers a variety of themes, from the Iglesia parroquial de San Salvador to the trails and activities in its parks.
Architecture and Sculpture
The Iglesia parroquial de San Salvador is a notable example of 16th- and 17th-century architecture in Madrid. It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. Inside are twelve altarpieces, including works by Madrid architect and altarpiece artist José Benito de Churriguera. Another distinctive feature is the surviving 18th-century organ.
The Museo de Escultura de Leganés is considered a reference point for avant-garde sculpture and covers around 27,000 square metres. Its collection includes works by prominent 20th-century artists. Activities for adults and children are organised around the museum, so the accompanying programme is also part of the city’s cultural offering, alongside the collection.
The museum is connected to public transport by bus routes 450, 468 and 481, as well as by the Casa del Reloj metro station; lines L1 and L12 are listed. As services may change, check the latest information before travelling.
Polvoranca and Green Spaces
The Parque Forestal Polvoranca covers 153 hectares within the municipality of Leganés. Nature serves as an educational resource at Parque de Polvoranca: the park is home to more than 400 plant species and a diverse range of wildlife, particularly bird species. The historic ruins of the settlement of Polvoranca are also located in the park, adding a connection to the area’s history to its nature theme.
The Laguna de Maripascuala in Parque Forestal Polvoranca covers around nine hectares. Sporting and leisure activities such as fishing, rowing and canoeing take place at the lagoon; check the conditions on site. The Centro de Educación Ambiental Polvoranca runs free, supervised activities for families and other visitors. The park’s community garden and rock garden serve as themed resources for its educational programme.
Routes and Outdoor Activities
The linear Arco-Verde route RC5 is 6.363 kilometres long. It connects La Serna commuter rail station in Fuenlabrada with San Nicasio metro station in Leganés, passing through Bosquesur and Polvoranca. The Arco-Verde route RC6 is a 3.299-kilometre round trip: it connects Ronda Oeste in Leganés with Alcorcón via Parque de Las Presillas. The stated distances and route formats offer a concrete comparison without specifying a walking or travel time. Route conditions and access may change; check the latest situation before setting out.
Another option for cyclists is the Bicisenda, which you can take from Polvoranca to the Bosquesur areas in Leganés. Fishing is possible at Lago Butarque. If you would like to fish there, check the local conditions beforehand.
Events with Changing Programmes
The programme for the 2025 Fiestas de San Nicasio included music, children’s activities and religious events in honour of the city’s patron saint, San Nicasio. The 2025 edition of the patron saint festivities, the Fiestas de Butarque, included more than a hundred activities organised by local peñas, as well as fairground rides at the fairground.
Las Lunas del Egaleo is a cultural programme held in July at Teatro Egaleo. For the 2026 edition, a programme of concerts, tribute shows, cinema and children’s performances was announced on 10 June; admission was free for the public. The content of the fiestas and cultural programmes varies from one edition to another. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates and the relevant programme.
