Canencia lies in a small, north-facing valley crossed by the stream of the same name, a tributary of the Lozoya. Around the town center, meadows, vegetable gardens and pastureland alternate; at higher elevations, oak forests and Scots pines shape the landscape. The area’s architectural history can also be seen in several places: in bridges over the stream and in the parish church of Santa María del Castillo.

Historic Bridges over the Canencia Stream

Puente Canto dates from the 14th or 15th century. It lies 50 meters from the confluence of the Canencia and Ortigal streams and has two asymmetrical arches. There is a viewpoint above the larger arch. Its design is therefore markedly different from that of Puente Cadenas: this narrow bridge crosses the Canencia Stream with a single, slightly pointed arch. It lies near an old mill and is surrounded by lush riverside vegetation.

Puente de Matafrailes is the bridge farthest from the town center. It is believed to date from the Middle Ages. The structure is built mostly of rubble masonry and has a single high opening. The three bridges offer distinct architectural features, making it possible to consider their designs and locations individually.

Santa María del Castillo and Its Architectural History

The parish church of Santa María del Castillo is a 15th-century Gothic building and is classified as being of national interest. Following damage during the Civil War and its subsequent restoration, it has a rectangular nave, a main chapel and a side chapel. Other architectural features include a pulpit with Mudéjar plasterwork and a two-story tower. The church thus combines its Gothic origins with traces of its later restoration.

Traditions and Celebrations Throughout the Year

The Semana de Recuperación de Tradiciones takes place in the first few days of August. It revives traditional games such as tug-of-war, ribbon dancing and the handkerchief game. The festival also includes a market selling regional products and a varied program of activities involving local associations and residents of Canencia. You should confirm the dates and program each year.

Other recurring celebrations have their own distinctive character: La Vaquilla takes place on January 20, the feast day of Saint Sebastian. Young people carry and parade a dressed wooden frame with horns; figures wearing bells also take part. Fiesta del Hornazo falls on Easter Monday and combines an outdoor meal with traditional games. The patron saint celebrations in honor of the Virgen del Castillo take place in the second week of October. Their program includes religious events, bullfighting events, folk dancing and traditional games. As dates and program details should be confirmed each year, and Easter Monday changes with the date of Easter, it is worth checking the current festival program before your trip.

Puerto de Canencia: Scenery and Road Cycling

Puerto de Canencia lies at an elevation of 1,524 meters in the Sierra de la Morcuera, between the municipalities of Canencia and Miraflores de la Sierra. The natural area is characterized by numerous Scots pines. The Área Recreativa del Puerto de Canencia recreation area has a large parking lot, a recreational area and a spring. These facilities may be subject to maintenance work or seasonal restrictions; check their status before visiting.

For road cycling, Puerto de Canencia is considered one of the classic mountain passes in the Comunidad de Madrid. This means the surrounding area brings together different points of interest: historic buildings in the town and a mountain pass known for road cycling. When choosing your travel dates, you can also take the festival dates into account and check annually changing program details in advance.
