Villarejo De Salvanés offers several specific cultural and landscape themes to help you plan your trip. Highlights include the Torre del Homenaje with the Museo de los Tercios Españoles, the Museo del Cine in the former “Cine París”, the Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol and the route to the Santa María archaeological site. Other features include esparto crafts, recurring events and the historic Fuente lavadero del Cañuelo fountain and washhouse complex. If you are planning a hotel stay with a cultural programme, these different themes can help you decide whether museums, events, or archaeological and landscape experiences should be the focus of your trip.

Culture among castles, churches and cinemas

The Torre del Homenaje houses the first Museo de los Tercios Españoles. It presents the history of the municipality and its castle in the context of Spanish history. Here, a single building offers a glimpse of both the history of the place and its wider historical context. The Iglesia de San Andrés Apóstol is a church built in the style of a fortress by the Military Order of Santiago. The Casa de la Tercia is another cultural venue, serving as a multipurpose hall that hosts numerous temporary exhibitions.

The Museo del Cine in the former “Cine París” in Villarejo De Salvanés offers a different focus. It is Spain’s first professional and technological film museum. Hall B displays a complete film projection booth from each decade of the 20th century, spanning from the first cinematographs of the Lumière brothers to the latest models. The exhibition thus brings early and later developments in film projection together.

Esparto crafts and recurring events

Traditional esparto grass spinning was declared an intangible cultural heritage of the Comunidad de Madrid by Decree 32/2025 of 28 May 2025. Free weekly workshops at the Museo Etnográfico of Villarejo De Salvanés offer a hands-on introduction to esparto crafts. As workshop frequency should be confirmed before your visit, it is advisable to check the dates in advance.

Events also shape the character of the town. Feria AgroMadrid is an exhibition of agricultural and livestock products, promoting and selling these products. It has been held annually since 1984; dates and programme vary from year to year. La Pasión de Villarejo has been staged since 1980. In 2013, the Comunidad de Madrid declared it an event of tourist interest. Its dates and staging may vary, so checking the current details is helpful when planning your trip.

Archaeological traces and landscape

The route to the Santa María archaeological site passes through a patchwork agricultural landscape with extensive dry-farmed fields and offers wide panoramic views. It passes the ruins of a medieval hermitage with two naves separated by pillars; the ruins lie near the source of the San Pedro stream. The route also features remains of a Carpetanian hillfort. Its historical context dates back to the Bronze Age. North of the Santa María archaeological site are remains of a Roman road, which may have been the Vía del Esparto.

Another historic site is the Fuente lavadero del Cañuelo complex, built in 1776 and restored to its original form through archaeological work. Its surroundings include landscapes of Portuguese and holm oaks, as well as elder and thyme. Animals found there include rabbits, hares, foxes and wild boars. The landscape and nature thus complement the historical themes visible in the buildings and along the route.
