Discover El Boalo: Heritage and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in El Boalo
El Boalo offers different ways to plan a trip: local and religious history on the one hand, and hiking trails on the other. El Rebollar, historic churches and rural structures give the cultural side plenty of substance; several routes can be compared by length and difficulty. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can weigh up whether heritage, festival traditions or specific trails will be the deciding factor in choosing your destination.
El Rebollar and Visigothic History
El Rebollar lies southwest of El Boalo, at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama. The archaeological site is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC); this designation was granted in 2024. El Rebollar was home to a rural Visigothic church that remained a place of worship from the 7th to the 18th century. This long period spans many centuries of religious use and gives the site a distinctive historical context. Those interested in archaeology will find a specific point of interest here for the cultural side of a trip. The cultural programme “Otoño Visigodo” offered another perspective on the site: its fourth edition took place in 2024 and included guided visits to El Rebollar, among other activities. If you’d like to make such a guided visit the occasion for your trip, check the dates for the relevant year.
Churches and Rural Heritage
The Iglesia de San Sebastián Mártir stands in Plaza de San Sebastián and was built in 1620. According to Christian tradition, Saint Sebastian is venerated as a protector against illness; the construction of the church was regarded as a miracle. The date of construction and the tradition thus offer two different historical perspectives on the same building.
The Ermita de San Isidro Labrador is located in the Las Laderas de El Boalo area, near the Arroyo del Herrero and at the foot of Peña MediodĂa. In the 20th century, local residents built it using local granite masonry. Its location, building material and construction history give this religious building a different connection to its surroundings than the church in the square.
The Potro de Herrar in El Boalo is also part of the ethnographic heritage of the Sierra de Madrid and is linked to the area’s livestock-raising tradition. Its stone structures are no longer in use. Historically, the Potro was used to restrain animals for shoeing draft and riding animals and for treating livestock. It therefore complements the religious buildings by offering insight into the area’s former livestock work.
Comparing Hiking Trails
The Ruta de las Villas passes the Ermita de San Isidro and continues to the Mirador de la Ponzonilla; it also leads to El Boalo. From the viewpoint, there are views of the Parque Regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares. As route details can change, check the route description before setting out if you plan to follow this trail.
For a comparison by length and difficulty, Senda 1 and Senda 2 offer clear differences: Senda 1 is a 9 km circular route of moderate difficulty. Senda 2 is 4.3 km long and rated easy. This gives you the choice of a longer circular trail or a shorter route with a lower difficulty rating. For both routes, it’s also advisable to check the latest details before setting out.
Stage 9 from Manzanares el Real to Moralzarzal follows a signposted route to El Boalo. Check trail conditions and signage before setting out. The municipality’s tourist resources for exploring the area include maps, guides and brochures. If needed, you can check in advance which materials are currently available.
Festival Traditions in El Boalo
On a festival day in honour of San Isidro, residents and visitors gather and share traditional rural meals. This community tradition adds another cultural dimension alongside the historic buildings and archaeological heritage. You can therefore get to know El Boalo through a range of themes: the long history of El Rebollar, religious and rural landmarks, or the differences between the hiking trails described here.
