Horcajo de la Sierra: Hiking Trails, History and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Horcajo De La Sierra
In Horcajo de la Sierra, local history, rural architecture and hiking trails with varied layouts come together. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: historic town centres, riverside paths or a mountain hike each call for different day plans.
Hiking trails between town centres, river and dehesa
The municipal Ruta urbana por Horcajo y Aoslos leads to the town centres of Horcajo de la Sierra and Aoslos. Including the walks through both town centres, it is 3.5 kilometres long in total; the route is listed as a one-way trail. The 8-kilometre circular route âHorcajo-Aoslos por la ruta de los molinos y Bellidasâ follows a different course: it also passes through both town centres, and half the route is shaded by riverside vegetation. The two options therefore differ both in length and in that one is described as a circular route.
The La reguera y la dehesa de Horcajo route starts in Horcajo de la Sierra. The 6-kilometre route takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes; the elevation gain is 172 metres, and the difficulty level is 2 out of 5. It passes through a well-preserved dehesa with Pyrenean oaks. These areas were traditionally used as pasture for livestock and to supply the village sustainably with firewood. The route and landscape thus combine a specific hiking profile with the traditional use of the surrounding area.
The Circular del Madarquillos trail follows the river through oak groves and riverside vegetation, including ash, alder and willow trees. Along the riverside paths, you can discover restored old bridges in Horcajo. The bridge known as Puente Antiguo spans the RĂo Madarquillos on the old Camino Real and forms part of the Cañada Real Segoviana. Another interpretive route between Horcajo de la Sierra and Aoslos follows the old road from Montejo de la Sierra to Buitrago del Lozoya, crosses the RĂo Madarquillos at the old bridge and leads to the Poza de las Yeguas. If you would like to experience this route with a guide, check availability with the local tourism office. Check local route conditions before setting out on a hike.
Church, fountain and rural cultural heritage
The Iglesia de San Pedro in Cathedra is a 15th-century Gothic church. Its Retablo Mayor dates from the late 15th or early 16th century and is attributed to Juan GonzĂĄlez Becerril and Pedro Berruguete. The townâs history also includes the Fuente antigua, the oldest fountain in Horcajo de la Sierra. It was the townâs main water source at least until the old water reservoir was built in 1957. The year 1855 or 1899 is inscribed above its spout.
The municipal Reguera de Horcajo-Madarcos is about 13.5 kilometres long and is considered the oldest surviving structure in the town. Bellidas also tells the story of the areaâs past: the settlement has been practically abandoned since the 17th century. Some of the remaining buildings are ruins, while others are privately occupied; in places, the ruins are overgrown with the surrounding vegetation.
In the municipality of Horcajo de la Sierra-Aoslos, low buildings made of rustic stone masonry have been preserved; they were originally livestock sheds and shelters for shepherds. Homes stand alongside old hay barns, stables and other livestock shelters. This juxtaposition offers a glimpse into a rural architectural style shaped by livestock farming and shepherdsâ lives. The La Alberca y La Tejera recreation area is also in the municipality, in a natural setting with Pyrenean oak forests and mountain streams along the RĂo Madarquillos. Check current access conditions and facilities before visiting.
Mountain hike and getting there
The Alto de la Pinilla circular route is 16 kilometres long and has a substantial elevation gain of about 700 metres. It leads to Alto de la Pinilla at an altitude of 1,879 metres. One of the six Civil War positions protecting the Somosierra Pass is located there. The route is described as a challenging mountain hike; check conditions and access before setting out.
From Madrid, take the N-I towards Burgos. You can either take the Aoslos-La Acebeda exit at kilometre 83 or turn off for Horcajo de la Sierra at kilometre 85.
