Valdilecha combines sacred architectural heritage with trails through pine forest, vineyards, and olive groves. Two specific highlights are key when planning your trip: the town’s Mudéjar architecture and the history of its hermitages, as well as hikes through varied landscapes. There is also a local tradition recognized at regional level and produce from the municipality. This allows you to take your interests in culture, history, and outdoor activities into account when choosing where to stay.

Churches and Hermitages

The Iglesia de San Martín Obispo was built in the 13th century, probably between 1240 and 1250. Its Mudéjar apse is one of the few surviving examples in the Comunidad de Madrid. Since 2017, the church has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The outside of the apse can be seen from the church atrium—a specific stop for anyone interested in the town’s architecture.

The Ermita de la Virgen de la Oliva dates from the 18th century. It houses the image of Nuestra Señora de la Oliva, the patron saint of Valdilecha. Local tradition tells that the Virgen de la Oliva appeared to a shepherd in an olive tree, after which the chapel was built in her honor. This story is part of local tradition and should be distinguished from the building’s architectural history.

On the western edge of the historic town center stands the Ermita del Cristo del Amparo, built in the second half of the 17th century. Inside, the figure of Christ hangs on a plain wooden altar. The Ermita de San José is the newest of Valdilecha’s hermitages; it was consecrated on September 7, 2006. Together, these sites offer a range of historical and architectural details for a walk focused on sacred heritage.

The PasiĂłn Viviente de Valdilecha

On June 10, 2026, the Comunidad de Madrid recognized the Pasión Viviente de Valdilecha as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional. It dates back to 1997 and the initiative of the Asociación Cultural San Martín. The first performance took place on Maundy Thursday, 1998. The two dates mark different milestones: the beginning of the tradition and its first performance. This Passion play adds a cultural dimension to the architectural history of the churches.

Hiking between Pine Forest, Vineyards, and Olive Groves

The Ruta del Pinar is a 3.5-kilometer circular trail of moderate difficulty, with a walking time of about 1.5 hours. It passes through Valdilecha’s pine forest and by vineyards, gardens, and the Paraje del Llanillo area. The route is recommended for observing local flora and fauna. There is a rest area near the starting point that is suitable for children. These details help you consider the distance and walking time together when planning.

Other trails pass through different landscape features. The Ruta del Trebolar climbs through olive groves; the route also passes the salt flats, the Vega, and a stream. The Trail del Capellán goes through the landscapes of the tierras del Capellán and the pine forest, and past the Sombrero del Cura area. The routes therefore differ in the landscapes described: the Ruta del Pinar links the forest, vineyards, and gardens, while the Ruta del Trebolar features olive groves and the points mentioned along the way.

The time and distance details also differ when comparing the routes: for the Ruta del Pinar, the distance is accompanied by a moderate difficulty rating and a walking time of about 1.5 hours. The route described for the 2026 Trail del Capellán covers 10.3 kilometers and can also be completed on foot. The route may differ in later editions.
