Brea de Tajo: Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Brea De Tajo
When planning a stay, Brea de Tajo offers several distinct points of interest: signposted hiking trails, the history of the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, an olive oil mill museum and golf practice. When choosing your destination, you can consider whether you want to focus primarily on the landscape, architectural history or a specific activity.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
Brea de Tajo has several signposted hiking trails. The Ruta de las Campiñas de Brea de Tajo follows the Cañada Real Soriana Oriental and is listed as 19.09 kilometres long. This gives anyone planning a trip a specific distance to consider when deciding how much walking to include.
The trails pass through landscapes with centuries-old holm oaks, oaks and the native plant El Zumaque. In the past, it was used to tan leather and make dyes. Historic shepherds’ huts and livestock pens associated with transhumance can also be found along the trails. Vegetation and traditional forms of pastoral farming are distinct aspects of the landscape here.
Church and Architectural History
The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a neoclassical building. On 25 June 1997, the Comunidad de Madrid declared it a monument. Its history also includes the earlier Gothic-Renaissance church, which was known as Santa María la Mayor in the 16th century. The three-section tower, the baptistery with its ribbed vault and the baptismal font have survived from that church.
The church’s artworks and features also make it a specific point of interest for a stay focused on cultural history. It preserves wall paintings by Ginés de Andrés Aguirre, including depictions of the Church Fathers in the vault’s spandrels. It also contains the remains of the oldest organ façade in the Comunidad de Madrid. The architectural forms, paintings and organ façade point to different elements of the church’s heritage without needing to be attributed to a single building phase.
Olive Oil Mill Museum and Golf Practice
The Museo Oleico La Almazara is housed in the only surviving olive oil mill among the several that once operated in Brea de Tajo. The mill room preserves millstones, a mixer, a press, a boiler, motors and settling tanks. Alongside this machinery, the museum displays an extensive collection of agricultural tools and household items. The museum thus presents olive oil processing and other agricultural and domestic objects as distinct subject areas.
Another specific activity is available at the Centro Deportivo Seve Ballesteros in the town centre. It provides 2,000 square metres for golf practice and has areas for putting, chipping, approach shots, bunker practice and a tee line. These named areas give an overview of the facility’s different training options and complement the hiking and cultural attractions with golf.
