Rascafría: Trails, Water and Monastery History
Accommodation in Rascafría
In Rascafría, monastery history meets a variety of experiences in nature. The Real Monasterio de Santa María de El Paular provides a historical landmark; the trails described here range from a flat route connecting two places to a longer circular route and a trail that can be covered using several different modes of transport. The Las Presillas bathing area also has clearly defined boundaries.
History and Monastery
The Real Monasterio de Santa María de El Paular was founded in 1390 by the House of Trastámara as the first Carthusian monastery in Castile. It has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the National Monument category since 1876. The founding date and protected status mark two distinct chapters in the monastery's history: its origins in the Middle Ages and its later official designation.
The monastery complex includes the church, chapter house, tabernacle-sanctuary, refectory and Cloister of Remembrance. The spaces listed show that this complex encompasses more than just the church. The specific visitor offer may change; check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.
A three-arched bridge built from granite blocks was probably constructed in the first half of the 18th century to replace an older bridge.
Landscape and Water
The Peñalara massif features well-preserved glacial landforms that are considered unique in the Comunidad de Madrid. At the Cascadas del Purgatorio, by contrast, water takes centre stage: the waterfalls were formed by erosion from the Arroyo del Aguilón. The stream flows between striking granite rock faces and dense areas of Scots pine forest.
El Bosque de Finlandia has a water feature, birch trees, yew trees and holly along the path from Rascafría to El Paular. Taken together, these place descriptions highlight different aspects of the landscape: glacial landforms in the Peñalara massif, water-shaped rock faces at the Cascadas del Purgatorio and a water feature on the path between Rascafría and El Paular.
Trails by Route Profile
The El Paular y Los Batanes circular route is 4.3 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Los Cascajales car park in the centre of Rascafría. Along the route, you can see forests of Pyrenean oak and riverside vegetation. Its shared start and end point distinguishes this circular trail from the route between Rascafría and Oteruelo.
The trail from Rascafría to Oteruelo is just over two kilometres long, has no incline and forms part of the Camino Natural. Compared with the circular route, it is shorter and specifically described as flat; the El Paular y Los Batanes route, by contrast, is characterised by its circular layout, forests and riverside vegetation.
Another option is the Ruta Verde 1. It runs from Puerto de Los Cotos via El Paular to Rascafría and can be covered on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. When snow conditions are suitable, part of it can also be traversed on skis. Your choice of route may therefore also depend on whether you prioritise a particular route profile or one of the listed modes of transport.
Visitor Information and Swimming
The Las Presillas recreation area has three river pools. Swimming is permitted only in this area; access to the recreation area is free. As local swimming and access rules may change, check them before your trip.
The Centro de Visitantes Valle de El Paular is located in Rascafría beside the Puente del Perdón and provides an information point for visitors. It is served by public bus routes 194 and 194A. If you plan to travel by bus, check the route and timetable before setting off, as routes and service times may change.
