Discover Navalcarnero: Culture, Wine and Hotels
Accommodation in Navalcarnero
Navalcarnero combines a historic townscape with wine traditions, cultural attractions and green spaces. Plaza de Segovia, churches and the Centro de Interpretación de Navalcarnero (CINC) give the town a variety of cultural facets. Events also take place here, and their dates and programmes are important when planning a specific trip.
Squares, Churches and Cultural Places
Plaza de Segovia has an irregular, spacious and open layout. Arcades line three of its four sides. The square is part of Navalcarnero’s historic complex, which was protected in 2000 by Decree 266/2000 of 14 December. It is also the setting for the patron saint festivals, the craft market and the book fair. If you would like to experience one of these events, check the programme for your travel dates.
The churches also reveal different aspects of the town’s cultural heritage. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is recognised as a National Historic-Artistic Monument and as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of a historic-artistic complex. Iglesia de San José was completely reconstructed in 2008, with particular attention paid to its rounded apse, stone portal and roof belfry. Iglesia de San Pedro is known for its polychrome decoration and iconography on the walls and ceilings. Its striking murals have earned it the nickname “Capilla Sixtina de Navalcarnero” (“Sistine Chapel of Navalcarnero”).
The Centro de Interpretación de Navalcarnero, or CINC, is housed in a restored farmhouse that has retained its traditional layout, including the living quarters, wine cellar, courtyard, stable and cave. The exhibition space covers approximately 1,000 square metres and is divided into ten areas. A visit is estimated to take around 45 to 60 minutes. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check them before making plans.
The open-air Parque-Museo Feliciano Hernández explores a different cultural theme. It is dedicated to the internationally renowned sculptor Feliciano Hernández, who settled in Navalcarnero at a young age. On the Paseo de los Personajes Ilustres in Parque Histórico de San Sebastián, you will encounter names associated with the art and culture of Navalcarnero. The Monumento al Labrador on Plaza de San José honours the town’s traditional resident: the figure, dressed in local costume, is associated with wheat and grapevines.
The Museo del Vino is currently closed to the public. Check this visitor notice again before your trip rather than making a firm plan to visit the museum.
Festivals and Special Experiences
The Encierros de Navalcarnero are closely associated with the patron saint festivals. Most take place at night and start from 1:00 a.m. Before each encierro, a procession led by a charanga winds through the town, from Plaza de Segovia to the bullring. On 8 October 2025, the Comunidad de Madrid reported that the traditional encierros had been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico (Tourist Interest Festival). As specific times and programmes may vary from one edition to another, check the event dates before your trip.
The Real Mercado del Siglo de Oro also has its own historical theme: it is designed in the style of the time of Philip IV. There, you can taste typical products of the town, attend theatre performances, and view and buy handicrafts. Check the programme for your travel year in advance.
Wine, Cuisine and Landscape
The wine tradition goes back a long way: the earliest discovered connection between Navalcarnero and wine is a licence from 1340 to plant vineyards in what is now the municipal area. The wineries produce a wide range, from young, fresh and fruity wines to signature wines, as well as Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva wines. The traditional cuevas (caves) have also been part of Navalcarnero’s “hidden” architecture for centuries and are associated with the storage of food, especially wine.
Local cuisine is traditionally associated with wine, chickpeas and lamb. At a celebration on Plaza de Segovia, Matanza tapas are served, preferably with Navalcarnero wine from the DO Vinos de Madrid; a craft market also takes place nearby. Confirm the dates for this celebration before your trip.
Two different park descriptions offer guidance for a stay with green spaces. Parque Histórico de San Sebastián is close to the historic centre and features paths, squares, fountains and sculptures. Parque Natural La Dehesa de Mari Martín covers around 10 hectares, with pine trees, holm oaks and scrubland shaping the vegetation. In this way, Navalcarnero brings together historic squares and cultural themes with wine traditions and varied landscapes.
