Guadalix de la Sierra lies in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama and is surrounded by small mountain formations. The Río Guadalix crosses the municipality from east to west. At Entrerríos, it joins streams and then flows into the Embalse de Pedrezuela. The river landscape, trails and cultural traditions give the town its distinctive character—useful guidance if you are looking for a destination for hiking, water activities or a culturally focused stay.

River Trails, Hikes and Water Activities

The Camino del Río runs through Guadalix de la Sierra along the banks of the Río Guadalix and is suitable for the whole family. If you are looking for a route with a stated distance and difficulty rating, you will find both for the Paseo a Peñarrubia: it is 4.4 kilometres long and has a low difficulty level. It starts at the Oficina de Turismo de Guadalix de la Sierra. Another walking route to Peña Rubia follows the banks of the Embalse de Pedrezuela and ends at the Abrigo de Peña Rubia.

The Camino Mendocino also offers another option when choosing a route. This pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela connects Guadalajara with Manzanares el Real. The stage from Guadalix de la Sierra to Soto del Real follows the yellow arrows of the Camino de Santiago. This lets you choose between a riverside trail, a route with a specific distance and difficulty rating, and a marked stage of the Camino Mendocino.

At the Puerto Deportivo de Guadalix, you can learn dinghy sailing and windsurfing; kayaking and paddle surfing are also available there. If you plan to include one of these activities in your stay, it is best to check the current conditions in advance. This will help you plan your trip around the activities that interest you.

Architecture and History in Town

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista is a church of the columnarias type, which is associated with the style of Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón. Its tower was built in the first third of the 16th century by the Campero family, father and son. The church also has the 17th-century Retablo de San Antonio: it is made of plaster and finished to resemble marble. Its architectural form, the history of its tower and its altarpiece offer different ways to explore the cultural heritage of Guadalix de la Sierra.

Festivals and Traditions Throughout the Year

If you want to plan your trip around a festival, several annual traditions take place in spring and September. The Semana Cultural is held during the week around 23 April and includes storytelling events, theatre, exhibitions and talks, among other activities. El Mayo is celebrated every year on 30 April: a tree is symbolically erected, followed by a celebration in the Plaza Consistorial. San Isidro follows on 15 May with a procession of tractors and horses accompanied by music.

The annual Fiestas Patronales in honour of the Virgen del Espinar run from 7 to 12 September. The programme includes music, verbena festivities, bull events, sports and religious ceremonies; visitors are also welcome to take part. If a particular date matters to you, check the current programme before travelling. The Día de la Tortilla is another seasonal tradition: this long-standing festival takes place on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday; traditionally, tortilla is eaten outdoors.

Religious customs also shape the year. Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Espinar is the patron saint of Guadalix de la Sierra. During Holy Week, she leaves her chapel for the Procesión del Encuentro. The annual procession in honour of San Juan Bautista makes its way to the river. There, anyone who wishes can renew their baptism in a ceremony that combines religious and festive elements.

The encierros chicos are a well-established attraction for children: in six runs, participants follow bull-shaped figures mounted on carts. Along with the Camino del Río, which is suitable for the whole family, this tradition offers another idea for planning a trip with children.
