If you are looking for a hotel in Gargantilla del Lozoya, these themes can help you plan your trip. Consider whether a festival date, the cultural landmarks or the landscape will shape your stay.

Churches and Historic Sites

The Iglesia San Benito Abad was rebuilt in 1943 over the ruins of an earlier church dating from the 16th century. Its architectural features include a bell gable with two sound openings and an entrance atrium built of granite with a round arch. The Ermita de Santiago also has a cultural and historical designation in addition to its architectural history: it is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Sitio Histórico category. This designation was made by Decree 45/2019 of 21 May.

The location of the Ermita can also be pinpointed: it lies 1.5 km from the town center, at the junction of the path from Gargantilla to the mill and the Cañadilla de las Tinadas livestock trail. It is also part of the Rinconada de las Cerradillas archaeological site. Its protected status, archaeological site and location at a trail junction reflect different aspects of this place and help situate it within Gargantilla’s history and surroundings.

The Mural de Gargantilla del Lozoya

The Mural de Gargantilla del Lozoya – Moxaico depicts a portrait of Juana de Castilla, known as La Beltraneja, against a subdued-color background. The background alludes to the flag of Castile. It also features lettering framed by an abstraction that recalls a medieval coffered ceiling. The portrait and the background design thus present two distinct motifs side by side: the historical figure depicted and the allusions to the flag and architecture.

Festivals Throughout the Year

On 21 March, Gargantilla del Lozoya celebrates the festival in honor of its patron saint, San Benito Abad. It includes a Mass, a procession and traditional music played on the gaita and Segovian drum. For the pilgrimage in honor of San Benito Abad, the brotherhood makes a procession to Las Fuentecillas on 5 July; the program includes various activities, children’s games and a raffle. The summer festivals take place on the third weekend of August, with children’s games, fancy dress and music in the village square.

The events differ in both date and program: the March festival combines a Mass and procession with music, the July event is a pilgrimage to Las Fuentecillas, and the August weekend brings together the summer festivals in the village square. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check that year’s program in advance.
