Aranjuez combines a historic cultural landscape with royal gardens and buildings along the Tagus. When choosing a hotel, you can consider which aspects of the town you want to shape your stay: garden grounds, the history of the royal residence, paths through the landscape or an experience on the river. The cultural landscape brings together historic kitchen gardens, tree-lined avenues and woodlands with royal ornamental gardens and the historic town centre dating from the 18th century.

Gardens and trails in the cultural landscape

The gardens differ in their design. The JardĂn de la Isla is an Italian-Flemish Renaissance garden surrounded by waterways of the Tagus. The JardĂn del PrĂncipe is a historic garden between Calle de la Reina and the Tagus. It includes the ensemble of Chinese structures, with a classical temple and a Chinese pagoda. The Real Casa del Labrador, a neoclassical building, is also located in the JardĂn del PrĂncipe.

The Jardín de Isabel II is also part of the town’s garden history: it is said to have been Aranjuez’s first urban garden space created for public use. Further out in the landscape, nature trails pass through riverside forests and orchards and kitchen gardens, and follow tree-lined paths. In Aranjuez, you can encounter both formal historic gardens and trails through cultivated and wooded landscapes. Nearby, Mar de Ontígola offers an ecologically valuable hiking route suitable for all age groups.

Royal residence and historic buildings

The Palacio Real de Aranjuez is a royal residence on the banks of the Tagus. Its history dates back to 1561, when Felipe II ordered the former maestral residence of Aranjuez to be replaced by a new building that preceded today’s Palacio Real. The palace houses the Gabinete de Porcelana, where the walls and ceilings are decorated with porcelain reliefs.

Other buildings and collections add to the picture of the town’s history. The Teatro Real Carlos III de Aranjuez is a restored 18th-century building. The Museo Taurino de Aranjuez is housed in the two-hundred-year-old Plaza de Toros. The bullring is one of only three arenas built before 1800 that are considered historic-artistic monuments. The Museo de Falúas Reales holds a collection of boats used by the Spanish kings to travel along the Tagus. You should check separately to see how the collection is currently presented.

By train or on the Tagus

The Tren de la Fresa connects Madrid and Aranjuez with a historic train made up of carriages with a century of history. It runs on Saturdays and Sundays in spring and autumn; the journey recreates a 19th-century trip. As timetables may change, check the times before you travel.

For an experience on the Tagus, there are options of different durations: El Curiosity offers a 45-minute boat trip; check departure times in advance. Club Piragüismo Aranjuez rents canoes and stand-up paddleboards by the hour, allowing you to explore the river at your own pace. Check current rental availability before making plans. The boat trip has a stated duration, while the rentals are based on hourly use—a specific difference to consider when planning your river activity.

Local produce and experiences nearby

The riverside gardens also provide the setting for experiences centred on regional produce. The Museo de la Fresa y la Huerta de Aranjuez offers a guided outdoor tour. You can learn about the production of strawberries, asparagus and other products from the riverside gardens. Check booking details in advance. Under the “Huerta Abierta” concept, you can buy produce directly from the growing areas; participating producers may vary. The tour and direct purchase offer two different ways to take part: the tour focuses on learning about cultivation, while Huerta Abierta is about buying on site.

In the area around Aranjuez, Bodega del Real Cortijo offers an introduction to the art of wine tasting. Together with the hiking route at Mar de OntĂgola, this provides more ways to plan your stay beyond the gardens and historic buildings.
