Alpedrete lies in the Hoyo de Villalba valley, on the slopes of the Sierra de Guadarrama. Its granite landscape, stone-masonry tradition and trails through the municipality reveal different aspects of the town.

Landscape and Quarrying Tradition

La Dehesa is a centuries-old landscape of meadows, grazing land, streams and wetlands. It is one of the areas with the greatest diversity of amphibians in the Community of Madrid. The granite landscape on the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama is also part of the area’s character. The El Legado Cantero trail explains how this landscape was formed and how more than twenty abandoned quarries were restored ecologically.

A marked trail also passes through restored, disused quarries. Visitors learn about the ecological value of these areas and the local stone-masonry tradition as they walk. The Área de Interpretación de las Vías Pecuarias de Alpedrete offers a different perspective on the landscape. It is located alongside the Cañada Real Coruñesa, which crosses the municipality, and shows the network of livestock-driving routes as a visible map on the ground.

Trails and Walks

El Legado Cantero is an easy circular trail through Monte de Utilidad Pública No. 27, “Dehesa Boyal,” in the municipality of Alpedrete. It is 1.6 kilometres long, has a low difficulty level and takes about an hour on foot. Coloured arrows mark the route. The short trail combines a manageable walking time with information about granite, quarries and their ecological restoration. Check local conditions before setting out.

For a longer walk through the town’s streets, consider the self-guided Ruta de las Farolas, available in Spanish and English. It starts and ends at the central Plaza de la Villa and covers around 13 kilometres, with 25 information panels. Three additional points on the route are Castillo de Mataespesa, Ermita de la Lanchuela and Nuestra Señora del Carmen in the Los Negrales district. Compared with the 1.6-kilometre El Legado Cantero, this circuit is considerably longer. Check the route signs and access to the additional points locally.

The Sierra de Guadarrama’s digitised trail collection, documented in 2018, also lists the route “ALPEDRETE. Subida al Cerro del Cañal” and the walking trail “ALPEDRETE. Entre canteras y dehesas.” Before setting out, check whether the digital map view is currently available.

Churches, Architecture and Local History

The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is considered one of the diocese’s most distinctive fortress churches. Its construction style places the structure in the 15th century, although it was traditionally dated to the 12th or 13th century. Inside is a 16th-century Mudéjar coffered ceiling with eight octagonal panels.

The Museo Cantero’s permanent exhibition is devoted to the tools used by Alpedrete’s stonemasons over time, as well as photographs and documents about the local quarrying tradition. QR codes beside the exhibits link to an audio guide about the history and use of the tools. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

Ermita de Santa Quiteria is a small stone religious building near Alpedrete’s schools and sports centre. It houses the image of the town’s patron saint. The Fiestas Patronales are held in honour of Santa Quiteria. The programme varies: the 2026 festivities programme includes the transfer of the saint’s image between the chapel and the parish church, as well as a procession; it also lists a traditional Romería.
