The Cañada Real Segoviana runs through the municipality of Soto Real. Part of the municipality is incorporated into the Parque Regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares; another part is incorporated into the Parque Nacional de la Sierra de Guadarrama. Nature, local history and recurring festivals offer different highlights for your trip. When planning your stay, you can take your cues from the trails, landmarks or festival traditions.

Trails and landscape

The Camino Mendocino a Santiago de Compostela passes through Soto Real and then through Manzanares el Real, where it joins the Camino de Madrid. The Anillo Verde route follows the Cañada Real Segoviana. Along a stretch of about two kilometres, it passes several amphibian ponds and white stork nesting sites. Nature watching varies by season, which you can take into account when choosing your travel dates.

The El Collado de la Dehesilla route also takes in several landscape features in the following sequence: it reaches the Cañada Real Segoviana and, after around 800 metres, arrives at the Arroyo del Mediano, which it crosses via a bridge. It then continues to the Dehesa Boyal, which the route skirts along a stone wall. The Dehesa Boyal is regarded as a historic site with high ecological value. Its diverse flora and fauna include a significant colony of white storks and spotless starlings.

Parque del Río lies close to the town centre and is a good place for walking, relaxing and observing the riverside vegetation. Once a livestock pasture, it is situated between the town and the Cañada Real; it also has natural and landscape value. So alongside trails and nature watching, there is a place described as suitable for a quieter break.

Landmarks and local history

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Inmaculada Concepción retains a tower dating from the 15th century. The present-day building combines architectural styles that developed between the 16th and 18th centuries. One notable feature is the Baroque main altarpiece, made of unpolychromed walnut wood in 1749. The tower, the building itself and the altarpiece represent different historical and artistic aspects of the church.

The Puente Medieval crosses the Arroyo Chozas and connects Plaza de la Villa with the area around the church in the historic town centre. It is built from local granite and has a single, slightly pointed humpback arch. Its shape is consistent with designs from the 12th to 15th centuries. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Rosario is dedicated to the town’s patron saint and was built in 1954 on an estate known as “Peña Mingazo”. From its small plateau, it offers an open panoramic view of Soto Real and the surrounding mountain landscape.

Festivals throughout the year

San Isidro is traditionally celebrated on 15 May as the feast day of the patron saint of livestock farmers. The celebrations include a procession from the Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción through the town to Parque del Río. Bollos preñaós are handed out there for the occasion. The Fiestas Patronales in honour of the Virgen del Rosario fall on the first Sunday in August, with celebrations extending to the days before and after.

On 15 August, the traditional Romería to the Ermita is held in honour of the Virgen del Rosario. It includes a communal meal of potatoes and meat. The Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Rosario festival on 7 October includes a Mass and a procession through Soto Real. The dates offer different points of focus: alongside fixed calendar dates, the Fiestas Patronales is a festival whose main day falls on the first Sunday in August.

The Sotogüeña bird festival is also a recurring event: held annually since it was founded in 2021, it brings together birdwatchers, families and other visitors. Together with seasonal nature watching and religious festival traditions, these events offer different themes to help you plan when to travel.
