Haute-Corse: Hiking Trails, Frescoes and Wine
Accommodation in Haute-Corse
Haute-Corse reveals itself along trails, through frescoes and in museums: heritage trails link villages, a ridge path crosses Cap Corse, and Bastia and Corte each offer their own historical points of interest. You can therefore choose a focus for your stay—longer hikes, architecture and church art, or urban history. If you are looking for a hotel, start by considering the places that matter to your trip.
Hiking trails between villages, ridges and coast
The heritage trails in the Regional Natural Park are short, easy circular routes from village to village. Along the way, you can discover dry-stone structures, ovens, fountains, washhouses and mills. For a longer hike, Cap Corse has the 48-kilometre Crêtes du Cap Corse footpath, intended for experienced hikers. It follows the Serra ridge up to 1,322 metres, with views across valleys and sea from Bastia to Centuri. The Communauté de Communes du Cap Corse maintains and marks the route; dividing it into at least three stages is planned. Check trail markings and route arrangements locally.
A different kind of route is the 35-kilometre coastal footpath through the Agriate, from Saint-Florent to Ostriconi. Allow about five hours and 45 minutes of walking to reach Saleccia; actual walking time depends on conditions and access to the path. Visitors can also reach the beaches of the Agriate by boat shuttles or water taxis from Saint-Florent, depending on the season and weather. Former shepherds’ shelters near Ghignu have been restored as overnight accommodation. Check their availability before your trip.
Museums and historic sites
In Bastia’s old town stands the Palais des Gouverneurs, a fortress dating from the 15th and 16th centuries that now houses the Musée de Bastia. Its permanent exhibition presents seven centuries of the city’s history and also explores the history of Corsica. The Musée de la Corse in Corte is a regional anthropology museum covering traditional Corsican society, economy and culture. Visitor attractions in the Centre Corse also include the Citadel of Corte, the Pont Eiffel, the Fortin de Pasciola and churches. The citadel can only be accessed through the Musée de la Corse; check visiting arrangements in advance.
Chapels and frescoes through the centuries
Santa Maria della Chjappella is a Romanesque chapel dating from the late 11th century. Its rare double semicircular apse makes it architecturally distinctive; it was listed as a historic monument in 1990. A walk of around 30 to 40 minutes along the Sentier Douanier leads to the chapel. The ruins of the Tour de Sainte Marie are also part of the fortified heritage of the Genoese towers. San Tumasgiu de Pastoreccia has been classified as a historic monument since 10 February 1923. Despite severe restoration damage, its frescoes have survived. The church is about a ten-minute walk from Castellu di u Pinzu, which overlooks the Golu Valley.
Other churches showcase different periods and pictorial details. San Michele de Castirla is a pre-Romanesque chapel with frescoes from the late 15th century. San Niculaiu de Sermanu is open to visitors and has 15th-century frescoes; check access information in advance. San Pantaleone in Gavignanu combines 9th-century decoration on its south portal with 15th-century frescoes. At San Quilicu in Cambia, 15th-century frescoes are found in the apse. Santa Maria Assunta in Favalellu has a lintel decorated with a cross, dating from the 7th century. In Brandu, the frescoes at Santa Maria di E Neve are dated to 1386 and are considered the oldest known frescoes in Corsica. There is also a hiking trail there linked to the village’s cultural sites.
Winegrowing and regional specialties
On Cap Corse, terraced vineyards produce AOC Muscat du Cap Corse and Coteaux du Cap Corse wines. In Balagne, AOC Calvi vineyards lie between L’Île-Rousse and Calvi; the area covers 12 estates and 276 hectares. The area and number of producers may change. A seasonal, artisanal energy bar from the Regional Natural Park uses local AOP honey, AOP chestnut flour, IGP hazelnuts from Cervione and organic lemon juice from Corsica.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
Bastia and L’Île-Rousse are among the ports receiving ferry arrivals from mainland France; routes and operators may change. In Balagne, the tram runs along the coast between Calvi and L’Île-Rousse, stopping at the beaches in between. Services and timetables may vary by season, so it is worth checking the latest schedules. On the Ajaccio–Corte railway line, the train climbs to 900 metres and offers views of Corsica’s mountain peaks; here too, timetables and service patterns may change.
