Casabianca: Village history on the slopes of Castagniccia
Accommodation in Casabianca
Casabianca lies on the eastern slopes of Castagniccia, within the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse. The village sits at an altitude of about 600 metres, below Cima a u Borgu, which reaches 930 metres. These elevations provide two clear reference points for understanding the location. Alongside this mountainous setting, the village has a history that can be read in its former fortified settlement and several religious buildings.
A fortified village and its history
Casabianca is a former fortified village dating from the 16th century; originally, its houses were surrounded by defensive walls. The fortifications point to the former layout of the village as a whole, offering a different way into its history than looking at individual buildings.
The Couvent Saint-Antoine was founded around 1420 as a house of the Servite Order. From 13 to 15 July 1755, a consultation was held there at which representatives of 16 Pieves elevated Pascal Paoli to the position of General-in-Chief of Corsica. These two milestones are more than three centuries apart and connect different historical roles of the same place: a religious foundation and a political gathering. The ruins of the Couvent Saint-Antoine are considered very accessible and well maintained; conditions may change, so check before your visit.
Church, chapel and fountain
The façades and roofs of the Église de l’Annonciation are partially protected as historic monuments under a decree dated 10 May 2012. The church grounds offer panoramic views of Mont San Petrone. This brings together a dated protection status for specific parts of the building and a distinctive landscape feature.
The Chapelle Saint-Michel has a single nave, a barrel vault and a bell tower crowned by a lantern. The single-nave structure and vault describe the layout of the interior, while the bell tower and its lantern add a distinct architectural feature. These characteristics give you concrete clues for identifying the chapel’s architectural form.
The Fontaine de Casabianca dates from 1734. Its basin supplies the adjoining washhouse through an overflow. The fountain thus combines a historical date with a structural relationship that extends beyond the basin itself. The condition of the site may change; check the situation on the ground.
The Itinéraire J hiking trail
The Itinéraire J hiking trail connects Giocatojo and Casabianca over a distance of 1.9 kilometres. This distance provides a concrete reference for planning your route. Unlike the historic buildings, each tied to a specific structure, this trail links two places. Trail conditions and markings may change, so check current route information before setting out.
