Algajola can be explored through several distinct facets: a Genoese fortress, religious buildings with their own histories, a striking fountain and a range of activities. These themes can help you plan your stay, from architecture and art to water sports and an e-bike tour. You can decide which of them will shape your hotel stay based on your travel interests.

Fortress, Church and Art

The Château-fort d’Algajola was built at the beginning of the 16th century, shortly before 1531, as the residence of the Genoese representative in Balagne. Its construction period and function are linked: the fortress was intended as the residence of this representative. It therefore provides a specific historical reference for anyone interested in the history of Balagne during their trip.

The parish church of Saint-Georges has a different construction history. It was built in the 15th century, burned down by the Saracens and altered in 1618. One of its distinctive features is its unusual square bell tower. The church also houses a 17th-century painting of the Deposition from the Cross, attributed to the Italian school. It has been classified as a Monument historique since 2004. The building’s history and the artwork each add their own emphasis, though they do not date from the same period.

Chapel, Monolith and Fountain

The Chapelle Saint Michel is located by the sea and was built in the 12th century. It has been repeatedly damaged by the weather and the sea, and was recently restored. No date for this restoration is given. The Monolithe d’Algajola tells a different, precisely dated story: the monolithic porphyry shaft, weighing more than 270 tonnes, was left in a quarry alongside the national road in 1837. Its material, weight and the place where it was left clearly distinguish it from the religious buildings.

The Fontaine Concerca is located opposite the entrance to the fortress. It consists of two distinct parts from different periods. It includes a stone basin from which villagers still draw water. If you are interested, check on site whether collecting water is practical. The fountain is therefore both a landmark and a place that continues to be used locally.

Landscape and Activities

Algajola lies on several hills that were once terraced and is surrounded by maquis, wild olive trees and holm oaks. This landscape offers a different focus from the buildings and artworks in the town. When planning your trip, you can therefore weigh your interest in historical details against including nature and activities.

At Plage d’Aregno, professional operators offer diving, jet skiing, sea kayaking excursions, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and funboarding. The options range from activities on the water to wind-dependent sports. A separate option is the e-bike tour from Algajola Sport et Nature to Sant’Antoninu and the Vallée d’Aregnu. The tour is described as an e-bike excursion; a guided tour is not promised. If you are considering several activities, it helps to assess each option individually based on your interests.

The Algajola Tourist Information Office sells hiking guide sheets and train tickets. If you would like to use either service, check the current opening hours before you arrive. This lets you coordinate plans for hikes or train journeys with the specific services available on site.
