Vallecalle: Rosary Art and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Vallecalle
Vallecalle offers visitors several cultural points of interest: a protected painting in the parish church of Saint-Paul, traditional slate houses and ruins. Visible traces of earlier uses and a local celebration add to the picture. The heritage sites differ in subject, architectural form and historical status.
The painting “Donation du Rosaire”
The protected painting and its frame, “Donation du Rosaire,” are in the parish church of Saint-Paul in Vallecalle. It depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, Saints Dominic and Peter, and 15 panels illustrating the mysteries of the Rosary. The figures and panels form different parts of the same religious pictorial programme: the Rosary theme is presented not only as a single subject, but unfolds through a series of depictions. The work is attributed to the Corsican painter Giovan Battista Moro and dated to the first half of the 18th century. You can therefore appreciate the painting for both its religious content and its multi-part composition and art-historical context.
Saint-Paul and the landscape
The promontory occupied by the parish church of Saint-Paul rises above the Nebbiu plain and offers views of the Gulf of Saint-Florent. The church’s setting thus connects the sacred art theme with a specific landscape. The painting and the view represent two distinct aspects of the same place.
Slate architecture and ruins
The walls of Vallecalle’s traditional houses are predominantly made of slate; the roofs are also traditionally made of slate. The material is therefore used for both the walls and the roofs. Historic houses can still be seen, too. The slate construction and the visible historic houses offer two concrete ways to understand the local architecture.
Among the ruins of the Chapelle Sainte-Anastasie, also known as Sant’Anastasia, a portal with a semicircular lintel has survived. The lintel is decorated with a cross resting on an anchor. The portal can thus be appreciated not only as a ruin, but also for its shape and ornament.
Further traces of local history
The ruins of a former castle stand on the Campo-Casso rock. Vallecalle’s heritage sites also include the ruins of the former church of San Giorgo. The two ruins represent different historical building types: a castle and a former church. Vallecalle’s old washhouse is also still visible, as are historic oil mills and historic houses. The washhouse and oil mills broaden the view of the area’s heritage to include buildings associated with washing and oil production.
