Discover Calenzana
Accommodation in Calenzana
Calenzana can be explored through two practical themes for planning a trip: religious architecture and pilgrimage history, and hiking. The churches and chapel offer a historical perspective through their construction phases and frescoes; the Forêt de Bonifatu and the long-distance trails are the nature and walking highlights. This lets you decide in advance whether to focus on cultural sites, the feast day of Sainte Restitude or outdoor trails.
Churches, architectural history and pilgrimage traditions
Several dates in the building history of Église Saint-Blaise et Campanile can be distinguished. Construction began in 1691. The nave contains frescoes painted by Bernardino Pardini in 1722; the four-storey bell tower was built between 1870 and 1875 to plans by the architect Guasco. The start of construction, the frescoes and the tower therefore point to different phases. If you are interested in architecture, you can read these three details as a chronology rather than assigning them to a single year of construction.
Église Sainte-Restitude dates from a much earlier period: it was built at the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century over the tomb of Sainte Restitude. Its 14th-century frescoes depict the martyrdom of Sainte Restitude and her companions. Its date of construction and subject matter distinguish it from Église Saint-Blaise et Campanile: here, the tomb and martyrdom are central, while Saint-Blaise is set in time through its construction, fresco painter and bell tower.
Chapelle de la Confrérie Sainte-Croix was built in the 16th century and remodelled in the 19th century. Today, it is used for exhibitions and cultural events. Its history thus spans an early construction phase, a later remodelling and its current cultural use.
The feast of Sainte Restitude has been held on 21 May since time immemorial and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year from Calenzana, the Balagne and across Corsica. If you want to focus on the pilgrimage tradition, this fixed date offers a practical reference point for planning your trip.
Forêt de Bonifatu and long-distance trails
Forêt de Bonifatu lies within the territory of the commune of Calenzana and extends across the north-western boundary of Parc naturel régional de Corse. Signposted, waymarked circular trails begin at the entrance. The circular walks at the forest entrance are a distinct nature option alongside the long-distance trails that start in Calenzana.
Calenzana is also a starting point for the long-distance trail Tra Mare è Monti. The GR 20 begins in the upper part of Calenzana at Fontaine de San’Antone and reaches Refuge d’Ortu di u Piobbu after about 6 hours and 30 minutes. This approximate duration gives you a sense of how long the route from the fountain to the refuge takes. The section near Bocca à u Saltu offers exceptional sea views along the GR 20.
