Mazzola: Culture and Mountain Views
Accommodation in Mazzola
Mazzola can be explored through two distinct aspects: its architectural heritage and the mountain landscape of Boziu. The municipality lies on the ridge of Boziu; from U Castellucciu, you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains. Chapels, the parish church of St Cyprien and smaller local highlights provide tangible points of interest for a stay focused on architecture and history. Exploring the lanes, walking a section of the Via Romana and sampling local chestnut flour add outdoor activity and regional cuisine to this focus.
Chapels and Churches in Mazzola
The Chapelle Saint-Michel, also called capella San Michele (Castelluccio), has a profiled façade with four pilasters and a quatrefoil window. The single-nave interior has a barrel vault with lunettes. The high altar dates from the 18th or 19th century. A single-nave interior is a space with one main nave; a barrel vault is a longitudinal vault, and lunettes are smaller vault forms that cut into it. The façade’s articulation, the vaulted ceiling and the dated altar give you three distinct points of reference for understanding the chapel’s architectural form.
The parish church of St Cyprien is also one of Mazzola’s attractions. A bell tower adjoins the church; its construction was never completed. A monastery or convent building once stood beside the Chapelle St Pancrace. It housed monks who welcomed pilgrims. A building near the chapel contains a monumental fireplace, described as being as tall as a person. The two sites reveal different aspects of the local heritage: at St Cyprien, the unfinished tower stands out; at St Pancrace, it is the former reception of pilgrims and the fireplace.
Local Highlights
Emperor Napoleon III gifted the municipality a golden ciborium. If you would like to include this object in your visit, check whether it is on display before you go. Outside the village, two “arcas” stand side by side: one is reserved for men, the other for women and children. Their location outside the village and their different designated groups make them a distinctive destination among the local highlights.
Local chestnut flour is another culinary highlight, which visitors can sample in Mazzola. As opportunities to sample it may vary, it is advisable to check current availability in advance.
On Foot: Lanes and the Via Romana
You can explore U Castellucciu on foot through its lanes. From there, you can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains. This means you can treat exploring the hamlet and taking in the mountain views as two separate parts of your day’s plans. The lanes are in U Castellucciu itself; the Via Romana, by contrast, includes a hiking section between two named places: Mazzola and Bustanicu. This lets you distinguish a walk through the hamlet from planning this hiking section. Check the route conditions and trail markings before setting out.
