Prunelli-Di-Fiumorbo stretches from the mountains to the sea. The commune is bordered to the north by the Fium’Orbu River and to the south by the Abbatescu. This span makes the mountains and the coast different perspectives on the same place. Prunelli-Di-Fiumorbo is also one of the 143 communes of the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse. You can plan a visit to the commune by exploring both its coast and its heritage sites.

Beach and coastal landscape

Plage de Calzarellu is a large sandy beach at the foot of the Calzarellu Tower. It stretches from the right bank of the Fium’Orbu River to the Étang de Gradugine, with dense maquis scrub lining the beach. Part of the former harbor quay at Calzarellu is still visible at the foot of the tower. The coastal landscape thus meets traces of earlier maritime use. Facilities at Plage de Calzarellu include toilets, showers, an access path, a car park and facilities for people with reduced mobility. Check which services are available seasonally before your trip.

Monastery, churches and historic sites

The Couvent San Francescu, also known as the Capuchin monastery, lies below the village and is now a ruin. It was built in 1703 at Palestinu on the initiative of Father François, who was born in Prunelli. Consolidation work was carried out to secure the most damaged sections.

At the Pievanie de la Cursa, the remains point to the 10th or 11th century: surviving features include liturgical columns, a round baptismal font, a column capital and a door tympanum. San Ghjuvanni Evangelista takes visitors much further back in time. The site is considered one of the earliest signs of the Christianization of Corsica; the present building dates to the late 4th or early 5th century. The site includes a church and the remains of a medieval settlement. The Church of Santa Maria in Prunelli is a fortified church in the classical style.

There is a specific access requirement for the ruins of Cursa: they can be reached via the shortcut road from Prunelli, provided that permission has first been obtained from the landowner. Obtain permission before your visit.
