Erbajolo: Churches, Casella and the Ridge Walk
Accommodation in Erbajolo
When choosing Erbajolo as a travel destination, you can plan your stay around several specific themes: protected heritage, walks, the ruins of Casella and an annual event. For planning, it is worth considering the historic sites and the different walking and route details separately. This will help you decide which visits and activities will be the focus of your trip.
Churches and Casella
The Église Saint-Martin has been protected in its entirety as a historic monument since 23 October 1926. This protection date indicates its legal protection, not the year it was built. Below the village, on the lower slope, stands the small Chapelle San Martinu. To visit its interior, you can collect the key from Casa di Marinu; check locally whether this access option is available for your visit. The key arrangement applies specifically to the interior of this chapel.
From the village centre, the ruins of the abandoned village of Casella are about a 15-minute walk beyond the Église Saint-Martin. This time is an estimate; trail conditions may affect the walking time. The ruins include the 15th-century Chapelle Saint-Joseph, with its slate roofs and a bell. You will encounter different historical points of reference here: the protection date of the Saint-Martin church and the period when the chapel in Casella was built.
Walks with different points of focus
For nature and heritage, the Association San Cristofalu offers themed walks in the municipality of Erbajolo. If you are planning one of these walks, check the dates in advance. One specific route is the “Les crêtes d’Erbajolo” loop: it starts at the Chapelle San Cristofalu above the village and follows the ridge north-northeast to the summit of Spinerazzie, at an altitude of 931 metres. Check trail conditions and waymarking before setting out.
The themed walks focus on nature and heritage; the loop follows a specific route along the ridge to a named summit. Casella can be gauged by its approximate walking time, while the ridge walk’s route and summit elevation provide orientation for planning. This lets you distinguish between the outings by type, without confusing the approximate walking time to Casella with the loop’s summit elevation.
Orientation and landscape
At the Chapelle Saint-Antoine Saint-Christophe, behind the snack bar in a landscaped garden, stands a lava-stone orientation table from Riom. A poem from the early 20th century celebrated the view of the five surrounding cantons. If you are interested in the landscape and its historical depiction, this literary perspective adds another way to explore the area alongside the specific walking destinations.
An event before Christmas
The “Scontri di u Vinu in Erbajolo” event takes place every year shortly before Christmas; the exact date varies. If you would like to combine your trip with the event, check the date for your chosen year before setting your travel dates. The pre-Christmas period provides a general indication, but does not replace checking the specific event date.
