Avapessa lies at an altitude of 300 metres between Cateri and Muro, in an extensive olive grove overlooking the Régino Plain. The municipal area stretches from the plain to the heights of Capu di Bestia, which reach 804 metres. Avapessa is 12 kilometres from L’Île-Rousse and 19 kilometres from Calvi; the sea is a 15-minute drive away. These are different points of reference for planning your trip: the setting among the olive groves, the distances to two towns and the stated drive to the sea. You can take the landscape and driving destinations into account when deciding whether Avapessa is the right destination for you.

Olive growing and local produce

The centuries-old olive grove is Avapessa’s most important local resource. Olive growing has endured, and numerous olive farmers produce olive oil here. This shapes not only the landscape but also gives the village a clear agricultural character. Sole di Balagna produces two single-variety olive oils: AOC Sabine, also known as “Oliu di Corsica”, and Picholine. The producer also makes homemade fig and orchard-fruit jams; availability may vary by season. KRAN makes ten products for visitors using produce from the Jardin d’Avapessa, including soft nougat, jam and dried almonds. The product ranges mentioned may change.

A 2022 brochure mentions the sale and tasting of Corsican AOP olive oils and homemade jams in Avapessa. Check before your trip whether tastings are available. The olive varieties are named, as are the fruits used for the jams; KRAN’s examples range from nougat to almonds. This makes it possible to distinguish the products mentioned by type and preparation.

Jardin Botanique Fruitier d’Avapessa

The Jardin Botanique Fruitier d’Avapessa covers three hectares and includes more than forty genera of edible fruit. These include many rare varieties from temperate and subtropical regions. The garden offers free visits, guided tours and tastings of seasonal fruit. It also runs fruit-preservation courses and training in this cultivation method. The tastings focus on seasonal fruit, while the courses cover preservation and cultivation methods. The area and number of genera give you two different points of reference: the size of the site and the diversity of its edible fruit.

Church and outdoor activities

Built in 1618, Sainte-Marie Church has a square bell tower with several levels and is home to the San Carlu brotherhood. In addition to olive growing and the orchard, the village thus offers a precisely dated building, a distinctive architectural feature and a religious community as other local points of interest.

An oil mill can also be visited in Avapessa; check the visiting and operating arrangements before your trip. There are hiking trails in the area around Avapessa. The church offers an architectural and religious point of interest, the oil mill is connected to olive oil production, and the trails add hiking in the surrounding area to these sightseeing options.
