Ventiseri offers several ways to make the most of a stay: the Etang de Palo Ramsar lagoon, trails focused on panoramic views and poetry, water activities in the Travo Valley, and historic buildings. When choosing a hotel location, it helps to consider what matters most to you: nature, activity or culture. Each local route has a different focus.

Getting There and the Panoramic Trail

From Travo, you can reach Ventiseri by leaving National Road 198 and taking Departmental Road 45. The panoramic circular trail also starts in Travo and follows Departmental Road 45 through the village of Ventiseri; along the way, it takes in some of the municipality’s finest views. For the journey, the sequence of National Road 198 and Departmental Road 45 is a useful reference point, while the circular trail follows its own route through the village. Road conditions and signs may change; check locally before setting out by car or on the trail.

Lagoon and Water in the Travo Valley

Etang de Palo is a well-preserved natural lagoon covering 212 hectares. Since September 15, 2008, it has been designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. It is home to significant populations of migratory and resident birds. The lagoon landscape and birdlife are the main attractions of this natural area, while the panoramic circular trail offers a different focus, with its views.

Etang de Palu, which belongs to Ventiseri and Serra, is accessible year-round. The easy circular trail there is about 4.8 kilometers long and takes approximately one hour; it is suitable for families. Trail conditions and access may change, so check both before visiting. Note the different spellings: Etang de Palu, with a u, is associated with the circular trail, while Etang de Palo, with an o, refers to the Ramsar lagoon.

In the Travo Valley, you can swim in natural pools along the route; river trekking is also possible. Water conditions can vary seasonally. Check conditions and safety before entering the river. Alongside the trails, water activities offer another distinct focus.

Poetry and Architecture

The Sentier poétique Charles-Jean Simonpoli was inaugurated on May 14, 2023, and dedicated to the memory of Charles-Jean Simonpoli. Contemporary poetic works are presented along the trail, including French translations of works in the Corsican language. Here, poetry and remembrance come together; the panoramic circular trail, by contrast, focuses on the municipality’s views.

The Chapelle Saint-Pancrace in Travo is a single-nave chapel with a semicircular apse, Tuscan capitals, and wood paneling in both the nave and the choir. “Single-nave” describes a building with one nave; the apse here is semicircular. These terms refer to different features of the building: its layout, capitals and interior paneling.

The ruins of Covasina Castle, also known as Castello di Carlomagno, date from the 9th century and the Carolingian era. While the chapel is characterized by its layout and interior furnishings, the castle ruins provide another cultural connection to the Carolingian period.

When choosing between the trails, the main consideration is what you’re looking for: the circular trail at Etang de Palu has a stated distance, approximate duration and easy difficulty level; the panoramic circular trail passes through Ventiseri and takes in the views, while the Sentier poétique focuses on contemporary poetry and remembrance. This makes it easy to choose a route based on the kind of outing you want.
