Matra offers two distinct areas of interest for planning a trip: cultural history and trails through a natural landscape. In the village, historical connections range from the Matra family and the Église Saint-Bernardin to A Petra Scritta, whose interpretation and dating remain uncertain. Those who prefer hiking will find two village trails in the Corsican Regional Nature Park, as well as the Sentier de Matra, with its stated difficulty level and elevation gain.

Château and Village History

The Château on Matra’s church square was once inhabited by the Matra family. The family was first an ally and later a rival of Pascal Paoli. This sequence shows that their relationship changed over time.

Église Saint-Bernardin

The Église Saint-Bernardin is a 17th-century building and an example of the rural and religious architecture of Haute-Corse. The church features wall paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building and its painted decoration therefore date from different centuries: the church is older than the wall paintings. This difference helps us consider the building and its decoration as two historical layers. The church remains open to visitors exploring the religious heritage of the Plaine Orientale. Opening arrangements may change; check before your visit.

A Petra Scritta de Matra

A Petra Scritta de Matra is a slate block at the site of Santa Maria. The stone bears cup marks and incisions that are thought to depict the night sky; it is said to date from the protohistoric period between 1200 and 900 BC. Both claims should be understood as conjectures: the possible meaning of the markings and the date remain uncertain. The stone is privately owned. The A Santa Maria association has put up an explanatory panel to interpret and promote A Petra Scritta; the interpretation presented at the site may change.

Trails through the Nature Park

Matra’s two village trails lie in the heart of the Corsican Regional Nature Park and pass through lush natural scenery with gently rolling terrain.

Sentier de Matra

The Sentier de Matra is a circular route that starts and ends in Matra. It is designated for walkers and riders and classified as difficult. These details answer different questions: the circular route identifies the shared start and end point, while the classification indicates the level of difficulty. The route has a stated elevation gain of 665 metres and an elevation loss of 645 metres. The ascent is therefore 20 metres greater than the descent. Consider the elevation profile and difficulty rating separately when assessing the route. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
