Discover Centuri: coastal paths, nature and heritage
Accommodation in Centuri
Centuri’s travel appeal includes coastal scenery, paths and heritage. If you’re looking for hotels in Centuri, these themes can help you tailor your trip to your interests: explore narrow lanes on foot, follow paths to hamlets, or walk the Sentier des Douaniers between Macinaggio and Centuri. Historic buildings and the fishing harbor offer further perspectives. Before booking, you can weigh up whether architectural history, hiking or coastal nature matters most to you.
Heritage: architectural history and individual buildings
Château Stoppielle dates from the second half of the 19th century and is one of the eleven so-called Maisons d’Américains in Centuri. A decree dated March 25, 2011, partially designated it as a Monument historique. Its painted ceiling and wall decorations also offer specific art-historical points of interest: they were created by the painter Paul-Baptiste Profizzi. An allegory of America is depicted in the center of the ceiling in the grand salon. The construction period, its place among the Maisons d’Américains and the named artistic motif offer different perspectives on the same building.
Another point of interest is the Chapelle Sainte-Anne de Bovalo, which was designated in its entirety as a Monument historique by decree dated June 30, 2020. The Saint-Sylvestre parish complex, by contrast, comprises several parts: a parish church, a chapel belonging to the pénitents de la Sainte-Croix brotherhood, and a bell tower. The parish church was rebuilt in 1821. This makes it possible to compare different forms of heritage: the designation of an entire chapel and a complex whose components, as well as the period when its parish church was rebuilt, are specified.
Getting around on foot: lanes, hamlets and the coastal path
The paths offer different ways to explore, too. Centuri’s narrow lanes can be explored on foot, and a network of paths leads to the hamlets. The Sentier des Douaniers is different: this 19-kilometer coastal hiking trail between Macinaggio and Centuri passes through protected natural areas. The village lanes, paths to the hamlets and a coastal route with set endpoints offer three distinct ways to get around. Before setting out on the Sentier, check local safety conditions.
Coastal scenery and the nature of Capense
Centuri’s characteristic maquis includes holm oaks, strawberry trees, mastic shrubs, thorny shrubs, heather, rockroses and caper bushes. This list of plants gives the landscape a distinctive botanical character. Just off Centuri lies Îlot de Capense, which is part of the Réserve naturelle des îles du Cap Corse. The coastal area of Centuri also includes Îlot de Capense as an ornithological reserve.
A specific rule applies to watercraft there: anchoring less than ten meters from the Capense shoreline is prohibited. If you’re traveling by watercraft, check this rule locally before heading out onto the water. This makes the protected-area rule a practical part of your planning, alongside the trails and nature-related activities on land.
Harbor views and local spiny lobster
Centuri’s fishing harbor is known for its spiny lobster; menus and availability vary by season. From the terraces of cafés and restaurants overlooking the harbor, you can watch boats come in. This harbor-side experience combines a local culinary association with a specific moment to observe. As individual businesses can change, check which options are currently available if you have a particular place in mind.
