Discover Lumio: Towers and Heritage
Accommodation in Lumio
The annual Fiera di u Pane festival also celebrates bread traditions, culture and heritage. You can therefore consider whether architectural history, landscape or an event date should shape your trip.
Genoese towers: two forms, different histories
There are two Genoese towers in the Lumio area, distinguished by their shapes. The Tour de Caldanu is square and stands at Punta Caldana; the Tour de Spanu is round. This contrast provides a simple way to tell the two structures apart.
The Tour de Caldanu also has a specific historical function. Construction was completed in 1592. The tower also served to guide and protect ships seeking shelter in the bay during storms. Its history is therefore shaped not only by its design: helping ships in the bay is also part of its recorded role.
Ruins, chapels and social history
The ruined village of Occi lies 377 metres above Lumio, and its ruins are still visible today. The Chapelle Annunziata brings together two distinct historical reference points: it dates from around the 15th century and is documented in the archives from 1589. The century provides an approximate date for its construction, while 1589 marks the beginning of its archival documentation.
The Chapelle Saint Pierre et Saint Paul adds another dimension to the area’s architectural history. It is a Romanesque building from the 11th century and was classified as a historic monument in 1992 because of its exterior decoration. The construction date and monument protection therefore relate to different aspects of the building.
U Carrubu adds a social history to these religious buildings. The solid stone building with arcades dates from the 18th century. Abbot Ignace Colonna de Leca had it built to provide accommodation for people in need and a school for children. Its original purpose brings social care and education together with architecture and heritage in the history of the area.
Nature and practical information
Punta di Spanu is home to fauna and flora, geological features, a granite quarry, Paillers and a Genoese tower. Natural and geological features sit alongside architectural and historical elements. This sets the area apart from the architectural history of the towers and chapels.
A Genoese tower forms the backdrop at Plage de l'Arinella, where there is also a large car park. This adds a practical visitor detail to the historical feature. Facilities may change. If the car park is important to your plans, check the current conditions before your visit.
Fiera di u Pane and reasons to visit
The Fiera di u Pane celebrates bread traditions, culture and heritage, and takes place every year. Its dates vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the date for the relevant year before finalising your plans. This lets you distinguish a visit for the event from a stay focused more on the towers, chapels, ruins or natural features.
When searching for a hotel in Lumio, these distinctions can help you define the purpose of your trip: the towers offer a window into Genoese history, the chapels and U Carrubu provide insight into religious and social aspects, and Punta di Spanu brings together natural, geological and architectural history. For a trip centred on the Fiera di u Pane, however, the festival’s changing annual date is the key planning point.
