Ghisoni: Mountains, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Ghisoni
Ghisoni brings together mountain scenery, trails and a diverse cultural heritage. When planning your trip, you can consider nature and history as distinct highlights: I Pozzi and Monte Renoso represent Corsica’s highland landscape, while churches, frescoes, fountains and a former mine offer insights into the area’s history. This can help you decide which aspect of the destination you want to focus on during your stay.
Mountain scenery and nature around Ghisoni
I Pozzi is a natural feature of Corsica: numerous pools of water dot its very green meadows. The plateau is marshy and is also the source of the Fium'Orbo. Water, open meadows and moisture all shape the landscape here. The Forêt de Marmano, by contrast, is an example of Corsica’s high-altitude forest. Its trees include Laricio and maritime pines, beech, silver fir and birch—a diverse mix that sets the forest apart from the open areas around I Pozzi.
Monte Renoso also shapes the landscape of Corsica’s mountains. At 2,357 metres, it is one of the island’s five highest peaks. Ghisoni is also part of the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse, Corsica’s regional natural park. This designation connects the destination with a landscape where highlands, forests and water-rich meadows each offer their own natural highlights.
The irrigation canal is another feature of the cultural landscape: it is three kilometres long and has supplied the local farmland since the 19th century. Its function shows how water is important not only to the natural character of I Pozzi, but also to local agriculture.
Hiking trails and winter sports
To hike to Lac de Bastani, leave Ghisoni via the D69, then take the D169 towards the Ghisoni Capanelle ski resort. The trailhead is at the upper end of the resort. The Croce à a Sarra loop offers another way to explore the landscape: it is designed as an introduction to botany. The tenth stage of the GT20 runs from Ghisoni to Zicavu and is about 45 kilometres long.
The Capanelle ski resort ranges in elevation from 1,580 to 1,870 metres and has three ski lifts, including one for beginners. Winter sports therefore complement the hiking options with a clearly defined mountain activity. The elevations and number of lifts give you specific points of reference when weighing this option against the destination’s natural and cultural experiences.
Churches, the mine and local history
The churches in Ghisoni represent different historical periods. The Church of the Brotherhood of Sainte Croix dates from the 15th century; its restored fresco is listed as a historic monument. The Church of San Francheschinu dates from the 17th century and belongs to the former Récollets monastery. A fresco in the chapel of Santa Croce, painted by Ignazio Saveriu Raffali in 1752, depicts the “Lamentation of Christ”. Together, these works offer a glimpse into religious art from different centuries.
The Fontaine de Neptune is also associated with a dated work of art: the cast-iron statue at the fountain is signed by Gabriel-Vital Dubray and dates from 1856. Beyond religious art, the former Mine de la Finosa offers a different perspective on the area’s history. Lead-silver, zinc and copper were mined there. The mine can be reached after a short walk; its tunnels are closed for safety reasons, while some remains of the open-pit workings can be seen on site.
If you’re looking for a hotel in Ghisoni, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: should the highlands and trails shape your stay, or the churches, frescoes, fountains and mine?
