Granite Spur, Sea Views and Village Layout

Sant'Antonino lies at an altitude of 500 metres on a granite spur between the sea and the mountains. From here, there are sweeping views of the Mediterranean. If you are looking for a destination with a historic village setting and hiking trails for a hotel stay, you will find plenty to explore here: the elevated location, the closely packed houses and the trails in and around Sant'Antonino.

The 75 houses are clustered around the granite spur, forming a labyrinthine historic village. A walk takes you through narrow lanes and beneath numerous vaulted passageways. The village's character is shaped both by its striking location and by its compact, intricate layout. At the summit are the remains of old fortifications and part of the donjon. From there, the view stretches across the Balagne to the sea.

Churches and Historic Traces

The Église de l’Annonciation stands on the main square at the foot of the village, outside it. It dates from the 18th century. The church houses four paintings owned by the municipality, which were classified as historic monuments in 1998. The church's construction date and the classification of the paintings are two separate historical points of reference: one dates the church building, while the other marks the recognition of the artworks.

Next to the Église de l’Annonciation is the Chapelle de la Confrérie. It stands behind the church and features wall paintings. Further down in the village is the Chapelle Sainte-Anne et des Bergers. The Chapelle Lavasina is on the west side of the granite spur, along the lane leading to the summit of the village. The village and its surroundings are now a sensitive archaeological zone; classified sites there include a protohistoric settlement, a medieval village and a medieval castle.

Olive Growing and Landscape

The historic landscape also includes the dry-stone walls on the slope of the promontory. Built for olive cultivation, they are called “tramizi”; their layout makes it possible to collect olives. The former importance of olive growing is also reflected in a figure from local history: at the beginning of the 19th century, twenty oil mills were operating in Sant'Antonino. The walls on the slope and the mills thus represent different aspects of the olive economy at the time.

Nature and landscape conservation are also part of the municipality: Sant'Antonino includes a Natura 2000 site designated as a Special Protection Area for the monitoring and protection of the red kite. The municipality also lies within the registered area “Bassin de Nonza”.

Hiking Trails and Practical Planning

The picturesque hiking trail “Le sentier de Pigna à Sant'Antonino” connects the villages of Pigna, Curbara and Sant’Antuninu. The route is 8 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty, and has an elevation gain and loss of 250 metres each. Check the distance and difficulty again before setting out. Trail conditions and details of guided programmes may vary by season.

The “GIRU DI SANTA REPARATA - PIGNA - SANT'ANTONINO” is also designated as a circular hiking route. A trail reaches Sant'Antonino; from the village, there are 360-degree views of the sea, plains and mountains. For trip planning, you can consider two questions separately: Which designated route suits your hiking plans, and would you also like to set aside time for the village's lanes, chapels and historic sites?

Getting There

Vehicle access to Sant'Antonino is restricted. All traffic is prohibited in the village, and driving there is not possible. There is a paid car park for cars and coaches at the foot of the Église de l’Annonciation. Bear this restriction in mind when planning your journey.
