Opava District: Castles, Parklands and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Opava District
Cultural sites, parklands and trails shape the travel experience in Opava District. A striking place to start is the Hradec nad Moravicí Castle Park: its viewpoints open up views of the Moravice Valley and the castle. When planning a hotel stay, you can first consider whether castle and museum experiences, nature activities or longer bike rides will be the focus of your trip.
Castles and Cultural History
Hradec nad Moravicí Castle Park covers around 130 hectares. Its named highlights include Beethovenův vrch, Lisztovo návrší and Bezručova vyhlídka. At the castle complex, visitors can access the park, viewpoints, the courtyard of the White Castle and an introductory historical exhibition. The castle’s historical visitors include Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Liszt. In Raduň, a visitor route leads through private aristocratic salons and a large attic space for guests, offering a different insight into the castle’s history.
Opava also offers cultural attractions: the origins of the Silesian Museum date back to a secondary-school museum opened in 1814. The Church of the Holy Spirit is part of a large Minorite complex. In Raduň, the Raduň–Jakubčovice educational trail also commemorates the crash of an American bomber on August 22, 1944. Three information panels tell the story; the specific date makes the trail’s historical focus immediately clear.
Arboretum and Trails Through the Landscape
In Stěbořice, the Nový Dvůr Arboretum showcases around 7,000 species of plants, trees and herbs, including varieties, cultivars and garden forms. Its rhododendron collection is considered one of the richest in the Czech Republic. The specific selection of plants may change over time. On June 16, 2026, an exhibition about Quido Riedl, his family and the history of the arboretum opened to the public in the arboretum’s chateau. Check access details before your visit.
The Hvozdnice educational trail offers a chance to compare nature: you can contrast floodplain deciduous forest and coniferous forest ecosystems there. It can be reached from Slavkov, Hertice, Otice and Uhlířov. Before hiking, check local conditions, as they can change seasonally. In Raduň, marked blue hiking trail 2228 also passes through Nové Sedlice, Přerovec, Podvihov, the Raduňka Valley, Kopanina and Bohučovice. The named places illustrate the variety of routes in the area; check local conditions before setting out.
Cycling and Recreation by the Water
Several described cycling routes are available for longer rides. The 90-kilometer Opava Radegast CykloTrack passes through Stěbořice, Nový Dvůr, Hradec nad Moravicí, Raduň and Kravaře. The Slezská magistrála runs from Jeseník via Rejvíz and Opava to Kravaře and onward toward Hlučín; it is 111 kilometers long in total. Route 551 Moravice connects Opava with the Kružberk Reservoir over around 44 kilometers and highlights both the reservoir and Hradec nad Moravicí Castle. Based on the stated lengths, the three routes differ considerably. Before setting out on the Slezská magistrála or Route 551, check the route and surface.
You can reach Stříbrné jezero on foot via Opava’s Městské sady or by taking bus 213 to the Kateřinky–Stříbrné jezero stop. There, you can swim, go for a walk or use the adjacent disc golf and beach volleyball courts. Check water conditions and the state of the recreational facilities before your visit. Routes and stops can change over time, so check the bus service before travelling.
