Melč: Castle, pilgrimage site and nature
Accommodation in Melč
Melč offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the castle, with its history and park; the Maria Talhof pilgrimage site; and the Mokřinky recreation area, with its nature and slate-related attractions. If you are looking for a hotel in Melč, you can first consider whether architecture, religious tradition, landscape or a hiking trail will be the main focus of your stay. The Melčský potok is also part of the local geography: it flows through Melč and joins the Moravice.
Melč Castle and its architectural history
Melč Castle is listed as a protected cultural monument. It retains a core dating to around the turn of the 17th century and has a mansard roof. With this type of roof, the lower section slopes more steeply than the upper section, making this architectural feature easier to identify. The castle grounds include an English-style park and a perimeter wall. A state-protected nature park with numerous rare trees and shrubs extends around Melč Castle.
The Church of St Anthony of Padua is also part of Melč’s architectural history. It was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style and constructed in 1889–1890 to plans by A. Bartel and architect J. M. Olbrich. This offers different historical points of reference: at the castle, the focus is on an older structural core; at the church, on the Neo-Gothic building phase of the late 19th century.
Maria Talhof and the hiking trail
Maria Talhof is about 1 km from Melč and can be reached from the village via a yellow-marked hiking trail. The pilgrimage site includes a wooden cross and a Lourdes grotto built of stone. On 14 September 1996, the site was restored with a cross, an altar and a renewed Stations of the Cross.
Pilgrimages are regularly held there for the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Dates may vary from year to year. If you would like to attend a pilgrimage, check the dates for the year of your trip. The yellow-marked hiking trail from Maria Talhof leads to Melč; from there, hikers can take the bus back to Vítkov. Check the bus schedule before setting out on this route as well.
Mokřinky: recreation, nature and slate
Mokřinky is now used primarily as a recreation area. Abandoned adits and shafts provide shelter for protected animals; the bat roosts in the mines are among the largest in Czechia. Recreation and animal protection therefore go hand in hand in Mokřinky.
Another way to explore the area is the Dědictví břidlice educational trail. It starts in Mokřinky and focuses on slate mining in the Vítkovsko area. This connects the area’s natural environment with the regional history of slate. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.
Traditions and community events
The traditional Bear Parade is part of community life and is organized by the municipality of Melč as a community event. The municipality also holds a community day. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check its date in advance. The different themes can help you decide what to focus on: the castle and church offer architectural history, Maria Talhof represents pilgrimage traditions, and Mokřinky is associated with recreation, nature and slate.
