Accommodation in Slavkov
Slavkov offers two clearly distinct themes for a stay: the town’s architectural and church history, and the natural environment of the Hvozdnice area. Its cultural heritage includes Slavkovský zámek, St. Anne’s Parish Church and St. Barbara’s Chapel. The Hvozdnice educational trail offers a different focus, with protected habitats, bodies of water and geological traces. These themes can help you shape your stay around your interest in historic buildings, a walk in nature, or both.
Cultural History in Slavkov
Slavkovský zámek is the oldest building in Slavkov. In 1586, the château was created by converting the original fortress. The only surviving, protected part of the château is the chapel, with its Renaissance vault. The description combines a structural form with a stylistic classification: a vault is a curved ceiling, while “Renaissance” classifies the architecture within an art-historical period.
St. Anne’s Parish Church was built between 1657 and 1665 by Václav Sigmund Sedlnický z Choltic. It is a single-nave Baroque church and was originally dedicated to All Saints. “Single-nave” describes a church with one main nave; the dedication adds the original dedication to the name St. Anne. Tombstones of the Lords of Slavkov set into the walls date from the second half of the 16th century, making them older than the church building.
A sandstone statue of St. John of Nepomuk, dating from 1722, was also moved to the parish church. The front of the plinth bears the relief coat of arms of the donors, the Counts Podstatský z Prusinovic. St. Barbara’s Baroque Chapel, a chapel dating from the early 19th century, is also located on Zámecká Street. The religious buildings therefore differ both in their histories and in their documented architectural details.
Nature and the Hvozdnice Educational Trail
The Hvozdnice Nature Reserve includes areas in the cadastral territory of Slavkov u Opavy. There, ponds, wetlands and remnants of floodplain forests form species-rich communities that provide a refuge for many bird and amphibian species. The bedrock is exposed in several places. Fossil remains of invertebrates, especially cephalopod and bivalve shells as well as plant remains from the Lower Carboniferous, can be found in clayey-silty shales. Hvozdnice thus brings together habitats for animals and geological traces from a distant period in Earth’s history.
The Hvozdnice educational trail in Slavkov offers a walk through the protected natural area. It is 9.5 km long and passes three ponds, as well as wetlands and pools. It can be reached from at least four directions: from Slavkov, Hertice, Otice and Uhlířov. For planning purposes, these details describe different things: the distance gives the length of the educational trail, while the four place names indicate directions from which it can be reached. Local trail conditions may change; check them before your walk.
