Sudice combines a religiously shaped cultural heritage with gently rolling countryside and routes through the surrounding area. When planning a hotel stay, you can choose from historical buildings, the annual Sudický odpust festival, and cycling or hiking routes to suit your interests. Connections with Opava and Ostrava are also relevant for travel to the area.

Countryside around Sudice

Sudice is located in the Hlučín Hills, a gently rolling agricultural landscape. Its elevation ranges from 238 to 255 metres above sea level; the terrain slopes down towards the valley of the Oldřišovský potok. The Bílá voda stream also flows through the town. Both the hilly landscape and the waterways are therefore part of the local scenery.

Churches and architectural history

The Basilica of St John the Baptist is a pseudo-Gothic, three-aisled basilica with a transept. It was built from red bricks and stone between 1904 and 1906. The complex of the Church of St John the Baptist was declared a cultural monument in 1990. Its architectural design, materials and heritage designation give the church several historical dimensions.

Another religious attraction is the Evangelical and Orthodox church in Sudice. It was consecrated in 1909 and originally built as an Evangelical funeral chapel. Today, services of both denominations are held there. Sudice thus offers different aspects of religious heritage: a pseudo-Gothic basilica and a place of worship with a history as a funeral chapel.

Memorial sites and local traditions

Outside Sudice, on the road to the Czech-Polish border, stands the memorial to Czechoslovak tank crews. It was erected in 1960. Its location outside the town and the date of its construction make it a distinct place to explore regional history.

The Sudický odpust is a two-day festival in honour of Sudice’s patron saint, held every year on the feast day of St John the Baptist. On Saturday, the festivities include music and a fireworks display; a wide range of refreshments, including numerous homemade specialities, is also available. The specific dishes may vary. As the date changes from year to year and the programme may change, check the dates for your travel period.

Cycling and hiking routes

Cycle Route 6055 runs from Třebom through Sudice, Rohov and Strahovice, through the Chuchelenský les towards Albertovec, and on to Kravaře. The 8.0-kilometre Cycle Route 6153 runs from the Kietrz/Třebom border crossing via Třebom to a border crossing in the direction of Racibórz. In Třebom, it connects with Cycle Route 6055 to Sudice. Route 6055 therefore passes through a series of named places and continues towards Kravaře; a specific distance is given for Route 6153, which links border sections via Třebom.

A blue-marked hiking route also starts in Sudice and leads to Hlučín. It passes through Rohov and Strahovice to Chuchelná, through the Chuchelna and Bělá forests, and past the remains of the border fortifications. The destination is a reconstructed, publicly accessible fortress in the area of the Czechoslovak fortifications. The cycling and hiking routes therefore differ not only in how you travel, but also in the places they pass through and their routes.
