Štěpánkovice offers several different reasons to visit: a Baroque church with a long history in the town, a public sports complex and gently rolling countryside with views of two mountain ranges. Cultural events and a train and bus connection to Opava round out the picture. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you decide whether you would like to focus your stay on the landscape, physical activity or local culture.

Hills and Views

Štěpánkovice lies in the Hlučín Hills, amid gently rolling countryside on the northern foothills of the last spurs of the Nízký Jeseník range. From elevated spots around the town, you can see the Beskid and Jeseníky Mountains. The terrain around Štěpánkovice is suitable for cycling.

Cycling offers a sporting way to explore the surrounding area, while the views of the Beskid and Jeseníky Mountains provide a distinctive landscape feature of their own. These two themes offer different ways to appreciate the landscape: as terrain suited to cycling and through the views from elevated spots.

Sports Facilities on the School Grounds

The public sports complex is located on the school grounds and run by the municipality. It includes courts for tennis, nohejbal and volleyball, a football pitch, a beach volleyball court and a tennis practice wall. The facilities also include a fire brigade sports area, a running track and sports equipment rental.

Unlike cycling in the surrounding area, the sports complex brings several sporting activities together in one designated location. This lets you choose between activities on the courts, on the running track and cycling around the area. Sports equipment rental adds to the facilities available at the complex.

Church of St Catherine: History and Architecture

The Church of St Catherine in Štěpánkovice was built in 1756 on the site of an earlier wooden building. Saint Catherine of Alexandria is the patron saint of both the church and the parish. The building is a single-nave Baroque church with a presbytery closed on three sides.

“Single-nave” describes a church building with one main nave; the presbytery is the chancel area by the altar, which in this case has a three-sided end. The terms therefore refer to different parts of the building: the main nave describes its basic layout, while the presbytery refers to the chancel area. Together, they provide a specific description of the architecture without losing sight of the building’s history, dating back to 1756.

Cultural Life and Albertovec

Štěpánkovice is known for its successful ethnographic ensembles. Amateur theatre also used to be performed here. Den Obce Štěpánkovice is a traditional event for all age groups, with an extensive cultural and sports programme.

The gardeners’ association holds well-attended fruit, vegetable and flower exhibitions, accompanied by a harvest thanksgiving mass. Alongside the ethnographic ensembles, the exhibitions and harvest thanksgiving are among the town’s specific cultural themes.

Albertovec is also part of the municipality of Štěpánkovice. In 1952, Albertovec began serving as a stud farm; this historical connection adds another facet to the town’s history.

Getting There and Dining

Štěpánkovice has very good train and bus connections to Opava. If you need a specific connection, check the latest departure times for your travel dates.
