Landscape and cycling connection
Hlavnice offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: religious art, castle history, a historic mill site and a cycling connection. The town lies in the Nízký Jeseník landscape area and within the Opavsko field landscape type. This classification provides a regional context for the trip, while the church, castle and mill add specific cultural and historical themes. Cycling Route 6159 passes through Hlavnice and connects to the Opava–Jakartovice cycle path. Those who include cycling in their travel plans can use this connection as a starting point for choosing further routes.
Church and castle
The Church of the Holy Trinity was built between 1773 and 1776 on the site of a demolished wooden church. Its building history is marked by a clear transition: the earlier wooden structure was replaced by the present church. The interior preserves figurative biblical scenes by Kramolín, as well as a rare Rococo altar and a Baroque altar. Several aspects come together here for a cultural and historical perspective: the history of the predecessor building, the construction period and the surviving works of art. Visitors who look beyond a church’s exterior architecture will also find a glimpse of its pictorial and liturgical furnishings in Hlavnice.
Hlavnice Castle was built in 1792 in the Empire style. The courtyard broadens the view beyond the castle building itself: three buildings in their original style are preserved there—a stable, a coach house and a former food store. This makes it possible to distinguish between the castle’s building history and the different functions of the courtyard buildings. This distinction is useful when choosing cultural and historical sites: the castle represents dated Empire-style architecture, while the three buildings mentioned represent the surviving structures of the courtyard.
Other historical themes
Another religious landmark is the Chapel of Saint Florian on Hůrka. Built of stone and roofed with slate, it was reconsecrated in 1993. The reconsecration provides a distinct historical reference point alongside its stone construction and slate roof. The region’s history also includes Obrana Slezska: the resistance organization was founded in Hlavnice in November 1938 and was the first of its kind in the Opava area.
A miller’s cottage has been set up for museum purposes on the site of the old mill. The site includes two two-storey granaries dating from 1856 and a third granary relocated from Loděnice. These buildings complement the history of the church and castle with the historic mill site and its various structures.
Cultural history or a cycling trip
When planning a trip, it is worth distinguishing between the cultural attractions rooted in the town and the cycling connection. The church, castle, chapel and buildings on the old mill site represent architectural and local history; Route 6159 passes through Hlavnice and connects to the Opava–Jakartovice cycle path.
