The history of slate at Muzeum břidlice
Muzeum břidlice is housed in a former mill dating from the first half of the 18th century. The building is now a listed monument. The museum focuses on the more than 700-year history of Budišov nad Budišovkou and on the formation, processing and use of slate, a material characteristic of the region. The town’s history and various aspects of the material are presented side by side: from how slate formed to how it was processed and used.
The exhibits include unique wooden mining carts. Exhibitions can change over time; if you would particularly like to see these carts, check before your visit whether they are still on display. In the small splitting workshop, visitors can try splitting a slate heart. Participation details may change. If this hands-on activity is important to you, ask in advance about current opportunities to take part.
The Naučná břidlicová stezka educational trail, which documents the region’s mines, starts at Muzeum břidlice. The museum and trail highlight different aspects of slate: the museum also covers the material and its uses, while the trail focuses on the mines. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider these two themes separately.
Historic buildings and traces of the past
Kamenný most is a Baroque stone bridge with two arches. It was built of rubble stone and has a fully masonry parapet. The structure dates from 1773. A sandstone sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk, added later and dated to 1725, stands on the parapet above the central pier. The two dates refer to different things: 1773 to the construction of the bridge, and 1725 to the sculpture. This distinction makes the chronology of the bridge and the later-installed sculpture clear.
The Vildštejn Castle ruins also offer a distinct historical connection. They are located near Budišov nad Budišovkou. Their first reliable written mention dates from 1316. This date refers to the mention of the ruins and provides a specific historical reference point for their documented history.
