Velké Heraltice between History and Nature

Velké Heraltice offers travelers interested in history and nature several clearly distinct themes: the castle, the medieval church, routes for cycling and hiking, and distinctive landscape features. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in the town, you can first consider which focus matters most for your trip. The castle and church represent architectural and local history; the watercourse, forest and marked trails offer different points of interest.

Castle and Orangery

Velké Heraltice Castle has a complex building history spanning from the late 13th to the 19th century and is one of the most significant castle properties in the Opava region. The castle complex also includes an orangery. Those interested in architectural history can therefore explore both the castle’s long development and another part of the complex.

Church, Organ and Family Crypt

The medieval church in Velké Heraltice was built in the second half of the 13th century or during the 14th century. Its crypt contains three wooden coffins holding priests who served there in the 18th century. The church organ was built by J. S. Staudinger of Andělská Hora in 1756; it is considered the third-oldest organ in the region. The church and organ can be dated with different levels of precision: two medieval periods are possible for the church, while the organ has a specific construction date of 1756.

The Bellegarde family crypt stands in the cemetery beside the church, by the enclosing wall. Its construction is thought to date to the last third of the 19th century. It takes the form of a single-sided colonnade with five arches on columns with Doric capitals. A colonnade is a row of columns; the five arches and Doric capitals give this crypt’s design its distinctive character.

Landscape and Nature

The Heraltický potok locality is a meandering watercourse with oxbows and wet meadows. The rare brook lamprey lives there. For nature enthusiasts, points of interest include both features of the watercourse and its surroundings, as well as a rare species. Hůrky is home to a unique mixed forest of varying ages, dominated by the original Sudeten larch stands. Unlike the watercourse, the natural focus in Hůrky is the forest’s composition and range of ages.

Cycling, Hiking Trails and Navigation

The road connecting Opava and Bruntál runs through Velké Heraltice. The Radegast Opava cycling loop also passes through the town and follows existing marked cycle routes. East of Velké Heraltice, you can reach a yellow-marked hiking trail via Kamenec. The direction and trail markings provide practical points of reference when choosing between cycling and hiking. Before setting out on a hike, check the current trail markings and access, as both may change.
