Filipovice: History and Maria Talhof
Accommodation in Filipovice
Filipovice can be explored through two distinct aspects: the origins of the settlement and the pilgrimage site of Maria Talhof west of the village. If you are looking for a hotel in Filipovice, these highlights can help you plan your trip. The local history takes you back to the beginnings in the 18th century and the history of the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary; Maria Talhof lies in a deep valley and can be reached via a steep, blue-marked walking trail. Historical developments and a specific hiking route are therefore separate topics.
From an Estate Farm to a Settlement
Filipovice began as an estate farm belonging to the nearby estate of Vikštejn Castle. Count František Josef Filip of Hodice bought the farm in 1706 and subsequently founded a settlement named after him. The first documentary mention provides a separate chronological reference: it appears in the 1707 register of the Radkov parish. The purchase of the farm, the subsequent founding of the settlement, and its early written mention can thus be understood as distinct stages in the village’s history.
Older place names also form part of this historical picture. In his 1836 topography of the Opava region, Faustin Ens also referred to Filipovice as “Philippdorf” and “Neudörfel.” The settlement was founded in the early 18th century; Ens’ topography dates from 1836.
The History of the Chapel
The residents of Filipovice began collecting donations in 1867 to build the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was probably built between 1902 and 1907 and consecrated in 1907. The exact construction date is not known.
Maria Talhof and the Trail into the Valley
West of Filipovice, the pilgrimage site of Maria Talhof lies in a deep valley of the Melčský potok. A steep walking trail marked in blue leads there from Filipovice. As marked routes may be rerouted or temporarily affected by conditions, check the current route before setting out.
Regular pilgrimages to Maria Talhof resumed in the second half of the 1990s. If you want to plan your trip around a pilgrimage, check the specific event dates in advance. This lets you treat a hike to the pilgrimage site and a visit on a particular event day as two separate planning considerations.
Getting to Filipovice
The road connection described on December 16, 2024, runs along a local road near the Hradec–Domoradovice–Melč state road. Check the current route before your trip. Together with the steep walking trail to Maria Talhof, this creates a practical distinction for your planning: the road connection concerns getting to Filipovice, while the route to the pilgrimage site is a separate hiking trail.
