Uhlířov – Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Uhlířov
Uhlířov combines nature-related attractions with a local history dating back to the 14th century. The Hvozdnice educational trail, the local ponds, and historic memorial sites offer concrete points of reference when planning a stay. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether walks, cycling, or local history should be the main focus of your trip.
Nature in and around Uhlířov
The Hvozdnice Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral areas of Slavkov, Štáblovice, and Uhlířov. In the northern part of Uhlířov’s cadastral area, forests border the protected area. The protection order for Hvozdnice came into effect on January 1, 1989. The local pond system, consisting of Přední and Zadní, is connected by the Uhlířovský potok stream, which flows into the Hvozdnice River. These natural features offer different perspectives: ponds and flowing water on one side, and forests on the edge of a protected area on the other.
Educational Trail and Walks
The Hvozdnice educational trail is accessible from Uhlířov and suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. The trail is therefore a good option if you would also like to get around by bike; you can include walks in your plans regardless of the time of year. The mixed forests around Uhlířov offer opportunities to gather mushrooms and wild berries; the applicable rules must be observed.
Local History and Memorial Sites
The earliest surviving written mention of Uhlířov dates from 1389. At that time, the village was a fief of the Bishopric of Olomouc in the so-called Keřkov district. Uhlířov probably originated as a settlement of Slavkov. The name is also thought to derive from charcoal burners who produced charcoal there.
The history of schooling includes two separate dates: the first school building was constructed in 1861; in 1883, an independent one-class school was officially established. Its first teacher was František Miroslav Juchelka. The Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua was built in 1871. The war memorial stands on the village green at the site of the former chapel. It commemorates residents who died in concentration camps and during the battles for liberation.
Traditions and Getting There
Traditional local events in Uhlířov include “vodění medvěda” (the bear procession) and the felling of the maypole. Christmas and Easter folk customs are also part of local tradition. Together with the chapel and memorial, they offer another way to explore local culture: alongside historical dates, these customs take center stage.
The Štáblovský mlýnek railway stop is about 1 km from Uhlířov. Local buses connect Uhlířov with the district town. If you plan to travel by train or bus, check the current timetables before setting out so you can plan a connection that suits your trip.
